Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 18, 1911.
Patented Mar. 12, 1912.
Serial No. 609,324.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL G. MORAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olyphant, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Labels, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improved label for bottles and is primarily directed to a label holder which, when in position to display the label, will cover and effectively prevent withdrawal of the cork, thereby requiring the manipulation of the holder to permit access to the cork.
The label is particularly serviceable in connection with bottles containing poison or dangerous drugs as, by its character, it will indicate the contents of the bottle and furthermore require special operation before the contents of the bottle are accessible, thereby notifying the user of the character of the material contained in the bottle.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of a label holder constructed to include a label plate, a cover plate, and a connector adapted to be engaged by the neck of the bottle, the holder being movable to permit the cover plate to be arranged in a position to overlie and prevent withdrawal of the cork or to be moved to a position to permit the convenient withdrawal of the same.
The invention in its preferred details of construction will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the application of the improved label holder to a bottle, the bottle being broken off. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the label holder shown raised.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, the improved label holder is constructed of a single strip of material having a maximum width exceeding that of the neck. The strip is materially reduced in width at one end to provide a tongue 1, and intermediate the ends with a body portion 2 bent to provide a cover plate 3 and a display plate 4 arranged at right angles to each other, the length of the display plate" preferably exceeding that of the cover plate. The tongue section 1 is projected for a short distance beyond the end of the sealing plate in alinement with the latter to provide a thumb-piece 5, then formed in a return bend on itself and projected downward, as at 7, terminating in a loop or gudgeon form 8 to more or less loosely receive a wire connector 9. If desired, the side and bottom edges of the display plate may be inturned to form flanges 10 to receive a card or other strip 11 bearing data indicating the contents of the bottle.
In securing the label holder in place the connector 9 is arranged to encircle the bottle neck 12 and its terminals intertwisted, as at 13, to secure the parts in place. When thus arranged, with the label holder in operative position the cover plate 3 will overlie and bear upon a cork 14 while the display plate will depend in front of the bottle neck. IVhile in this position, the label 11 is in a convenient display position and the cork 1 1 practically inaccessible without operating the label holder. When it is desired to draw the cork, the label holder is turned backward on the connector 9, as a pivot or hinge, which renders the cork accessible and at the same time displays the inner side of the display plate 4, the manipulation of the label holder being rendered convenient by the finger-piece 5. If desired, the inner surface of the display plate may be suitably inscribed to indicate the dangerous contents of the bottle, as for example, with the usual symbolic characterization of the skull and cross bones.
The label holder is preferably constructed of a single strip of sheet metal, though in this connection I contemplate the use of any desired material and the manufacture of the device in any desired size.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is A label holder including a strip of material reduced at one end to form a tongue, that port-ion of greater width being bent at right angles to provide a cover plate and a display plate, the tongue being arranged to form a finger-piece and a projection from the finger-piece to form a support, and a connector loosely mounted in the support.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MICHAEL C. MORAN.
