To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOLLAND lVnmcLnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of .Douglas and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Regulating-Valves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvn'ients in cocks or valves which are attached to water service pipes or other pipes to which it is applicable to regulate the flow of water therein,
I prefer to name the device valve.
The object of my invention is to produce a cock or valve which is simple, durable and inexpensive in construction, reliable in opertion, and possessing such desirable features, as provision for a regulated or a full pipe flow of water; provision for separating, storing and removing any deposit carried in the water supply which may prevent the discharge of a constant quantity through the regulating device, and for the last named purposes, making all parts of the device accessible. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of the body and key of a cock similar to what is commonly known as a straightway core cock, together with a section of the parts of my invention attached thereto, the center line of the same being a continuation of that of the key. Fig. 2 is a section of the same cock as described above in a plane through the centerI line of the body and at right angles to the key, and showing parts of a modified form of my invention attached to the side of the body of the cock. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation showing the handle of the key shown in Fig. 2 and showing parts of the cock with a modification of my invention attached. Fig. 4l is a sectional elevation showing a modification of my invention. Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation of a part of my invention showing a modification of same.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The drawings are proportioned for a full sized one-half inch cock. The material used for the construction is preferably brass.
Referring to the drawings 1, 1 is the body of the cock or valve, the service pipe carryregulating ing the water supply being attached to the right hand side of 1 by a screw joint.
2 is the rotatable key or plug of the cock.
3 is a :full straightway opening in 2.
4t is an inlet hole in the Iside of 2 at right angles to 3 and opening into 3.
5 in Fig. 1 is an opening connecting wit-h 3 and passes up through 2 opening into the parts above the key.
5 in Figs. 2, 3 and 4f is an opening in the side of the body 1, connecting with 3 when 2 is rotated and opening into the parts above the body and key.
6 in Fig. il is an extension of the top of the key.

l0 is a hollow cylindrical reservoir attached to G and 6 by 7, it containing 9 which opens into it.
11 is a handle on 10, 11 is a handle on 2. 12 a hexagonal head on 10 shown in broken lines.
13 is a regulating plug, as shown in Figs. l and 2 it is screwed into 10, as shown in Fig. 3 it is screwed into (3 displacing 9, 9 and 10 being removed, it has a hole through it the size of which determines the amount of the flow and is regulated for the pressure of the water supply.
13 is made of brass, hard rubber or other suitable material. 14 is a stop on 1. 15 is a stop on 6. These stops are only used on the device as shown in Fig. 1.
1G as shown in Figs. 4t and 5 is a pet cock or valve which may be used instead of 13.
The operation of the device is as follows: The key being in the first position as shown in the figures, water enters through 4, Hows up in 3 and 5 or 5', thence through 9 into 10 and out at 13. In passing through 10 the deposit in the water is thrown down in it around 9. lVhere the quantity of deposit is small and the service pipe may be trusted to retain it, the regulating device 13 or 16 is screwed into 8 and the reservoir 10 and pipe 9 omitted. Instead of the regulating plug 13, a pet cock, valve or similar' device may f Copies of this be used to regulate the flow. By turning the key by the handle one quarter turn to the left from the position shown in the drawings, it is in the second position, the Jfull iioW of v'vater is turned through 1 and 3, the service pipe is cleared of deposit and the tank lled for testing Without delay.
Referring to Fig. 1, by turning the key one hal turn to the left from the position shovvn, it is in the third position, the Water is shutoi Jfrom all parts of the device, the stop 15 engages the stop 1li preventing Q from turning more to the left. By turning the handle more to the left the reservoir 10 is unscrevved from 6 at the joint 7 Referring to Figs. 2 and 3, the operation is the same as described above, except no stops are required to unscrevv 10, and the key is turned by its handle 11.
Having unscrevved 10, all parts of the device are open and accessible for inspect-ion, cleaning and repair; after Which 10 may be again replaced by turning the key one revolution to the right, shutting olia the Water .and engaging 14e and 15 to screw 10 in place.
The key is then turned back to the position as shown in the drawing and the flow is again discharged through the regulating device.
The hexagonal heads shown on 6 and 10 by bro-ken lines are for the use of Wrenches when necessary.
Having described theV construction and operation of my device, what l. claim as my invention and desire to secure my Letters Patent is 1.
