To all (0/00/10 it may concern Be itknown that I, CONRAD V. ZIMMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo in the county of Erie and State of New York have invented new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to a valve which is more particularly designed for use in connection with the flushing system of a water closet. or a faucet for domestic purposes, although the same may also be used for a variety of other purposes.
The objects of this invention are to produce a valve which is comparatively simple in construction and can he produced at comaratively low cost, which will provide a large flow of water when the same is open and can be'tightly closed with but little pressure when the same is not in use, and which can be readily cleaned of any obstructions.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of the flushing tank of a water closet equipped with one form of valve embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same taken on line 22, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section showing my invention embodied in a faucet.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The water closet flushing apparatus which is shown in Figs. 1 and 2 for illustrating one of the various applications of my invention, comprises a tank 1 which is provided with a water inlet pipe 2, a water outlet pipe 3, a verti(rally-movable valve 1 which controls the outlet tube 3 and which may be operated by means of a rock shaft 5 jourualed on the water tank and provided within the latter with a crank 6 connected with the valve 4. and externally of the tank with a handle 7 for manipulating the same, and a vertically-movablc float 8 which rises and falls with the water in the tank and which is mounted on a lever 9 pivoted to the side wall of the tank and operatively connected with an inlet valve which controls the admission of water from the supply pipe 2 into the tank. This admission valve embodies one form of my invention, and as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the same is constructed as follows:
he outer wall or inclosing casing of this valve preferably comprises an upwardlytapering conical body 10, an upper head 11 connected with the upper end of this body and a lower head 12 which is connected by a screw joint 13 with the lower end of the body 10 and'provided centrally with an internally screw threaded opening 141 which engages with the upper externally screw threaded end of the supply pipe 2.
Within 'the outer wall is arranged an inner wall 15 which is also preferably of upwardly-tapering conical form and connected at its upper small end with the head 11 while its lower large end is provided with a lower head or plug 16 which is preferably detachably secured thereto by a screw joint 17. The inner wall is separated from the outer wall by an intervening inlet chamber which communicates with the upper end of the supply pipe and the space within the inner wall forms an outlet chamber which opens at its upper small end into the tank and is provided in its sides with a plurality of ports or openings 18 through which the inlet and outlet chambers of the valves are placed in communication with each other. The conical bodies of the inner and outer walls 10, 15 and the upper head 11 connecting the same are preferably formed integrally by casting as shown in Fig. 1.
The bore of the conical portion of the inner wall forms an upwardly-tapering conical valve seat. Within the outlet chamber is arranged an upwardly-tapering conical valve plug 20 which is adapted to be moved axially in one direction so as to engage its conical surface with the bore or valve seat of the inner wall and thereby cover the ports or openings, or to be moved axially in the opposite direction for uncovering these ports, thereby either opening or closing the valve. When the valve plug is depressed and the parts are uncovered, the water passes from the inlet chamber through the several ports into the-outlet chamber and thence through the upper end of the latter into the tank. When the valve is thus opened, a comparatively large flow of water is obtained which operates to eflectively flush the same and dislodge any sediment therein, and it also permits of filling the tank rapidly. Upon raising the valve plug, the wedging action of the same which is produced by the engagement of this plug with the bore of the outlet chamber causes these parts to fit tightly against each other and thereby effectively close the ports, so as to avoid leakage. This opening and closing of the valve plug is effected by connecting the upper or small end of the same by means of a shifting rod 19 with the float lever 9, so that when the float descends due to a discharge of the water from the tank, then the valve will be opened and the supply of waterin the tank will be quickly replenished, and when the level of the water in the tank reaches normal then the float while rising with the water will operate to shift the valve plug into its closed position. The angle of the tapering surface of the valve plug and the seat cooperating therewith is preferably so determined that'a comparatively light up ward pressure against this valve plug by means of the float will operate to effectively close the same and a descent of the float due to the discharge of the water from the tank will also operate to promptly open this valve.
In assembling the several parts of this valve, the plug is first introduced into the outlet chamber, then the lower head 16 is applied to the outlet chamber, and then the lower head 12 is secured to the lower end of the inlet chamber. The valve proper therefore consists of very few parts which can'be easily assembled, preparatory to installing the same, and the same can also be readily CllSlIlGlllbBlGd. when this becomes necessary for inspection or cleaning.
If desired, this valve may be organized as a faucet, as shown in Fig. 3. In this lastmentioned construction, the nozzle 21 projects laterally from the upper small ends of the outer and inner walls 22, 23 and com municates with the upper small end of the outlet chamber. The lower or large end of the outlet chamber is closed by means of a screw plug 24; secured thereto and the lower head 32 of the outer wall is formed intedle.
grally therewith and provided with a central internally-screw threaded opening which receives the supply pipe 26. The valve plug 27 is introduced through the openings in the lower portions of the outer and inner walls while these parts are detached from the supply pipe and from the plug 27, and the latter is yieldingly held in its elevated position in which it closes the ports 28 extending through the inner wall from the inlet chamber to the outlet chamber by' thereby permitting the water or other liquid to pass from the inlet. chamber through the ports and into the outlet chamber, and
thence through the nozzle 21 to the exterior of the valve.
Owing to the simplicity of the construction of this valve, the same can be produced at comparatively low cost and on account of the ease with which the same may be operated and its security against leakage, it is particularly well suited for household purposes.
I claim as my invention:
1. A valve comprising a body having an inner wall, an outer wall separated from said inner wall, a head connecting the upper ends of said inner and outer walls, said head and inner and outer walls being formed integrally and the space between said inner and outer walls forming an inlet chamber, said inner wall being provided with a plurality of ports and forming an outlet chamber and having its bore constructed to form an upwardly-tapering valve seat, a closure forthe lower end of said outlet chamber detachably-connected therewith, and an upwardly-tapering conical valve plug arranged in said outlet chamber and movable axially into and out of engagement with the bore thereof for closing andopening said ports.
2. A valve comprising a body having an inner wall, an outer wall separated from said inner wall, afhead connecting the upper ends of said inner and outer walls and formed integrally therewith, the space be tween said inner and outer walls forming an inlet chamber, and said inner wall being provided with a plurality ofports and forming an outlet chamber and having its bore constructed to form an upwardly tapering valve seat, a screw plug closing the lower end of said outlet chamber, and an upwardly tainlet chamber, and said inner wall being' provided with a plurality of ports and forming an outlet chamber and'having its bore. 7
constructed to form an upwardly tapering conical valve seat, a plug closin the lower end of said outlet chamber, and an upwardly tapering conical valve plug arranged in said outlet chamber and movable axially into and out of engagement with the bore thereof for closing and opening said ports, and a cap closing the lower end of said outer wall and provided with an inlet.
