PACKAGE-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 25, 1909.
Patented Mar. 12, 1912.
Serial No. 524,368.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN D.WEAVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at River Rouge, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package- Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is a package tie and relates more particularly to package ties adapted for tying bundles-of letters and papers for transportation, as through the mails.
The object of the device is to produce a simple, durable, and inexpensive package tie that will securely hold the package, that will not be liable to catch on projecting parts of other packages or mail pouches.
Another object of my device is to provide a fastening means that will admit of extreme rapidity in tying the package.
The construction and mode of operation of my improved tie will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan View of a package tie attached to a package of letters, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the part shown in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a side view of the latch by which the thong is fastened, Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross-section taken on the line A, A of Fig. 3, Fig. 5 is an enlarged cross-sectional detail of the pivot by which the thong is fastened to the base.
The device consists in a base 1 preferably made of sole leather or other suitable mate rial and preferably having one corner cut away as at 1 to disclose the stamp, in the case of special delivery letters, in'which the special delivery stamp is required to be exposed on the face of the package of letters. The corner thus cut away also allows the address label of the package to be exposed. A hole 1 is also provided, by which to hang up the package tie when not in use. Fixed to the base 1 is a thong 2 of raw-hide or other suitable material, by which the package is tied. Fixed to the base 1 by riveting or otherwise, is a catch by which the thong is held in place on the package and by which the end of the thong is gripped to prevent accidental untying.
The catch consists in a metal back 3 riveted or otherwise secured to the base 1. The middle portion 3 of the back 8 is raised, as
shown in Fig. 4, and above the raised portion 3* is a flat spring 4 riveted or otherwise secured at one end to the back 3. Between the raised part 3" and the spring 4 the end of the thong is gripped, the end of the thong being slipped between as the final movement in tying the package. The back 3 has a laterally extending hooked arm 3", around which the thong is passed without being clamped thereby, as shown in Fig. 1. One end of the thong 2 is pivotally secured to the base 1 by means of the pivot 5, shown in detail in Fig. 5. The pivot 5 is riveted so as to clamp two shoulders 6, 6, to the base 1, the pivot 5 being immovable and the end of the thong 2 being loosely mounted thereon.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a package tie of the class described, the combination with a base, of a back fixed to said base, said back formed with a diagonally projecting arm having a hook at its extremity, said back formed with a raised middle portion, a leaf spring secured to said back and overlapping said raised portion, a pivot removably secured to said base, said pivot located approximately in the middle of said base, and a thong, one end of which is loosely received on and swiveled to said pivot, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof, I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN DANIEL WEAVER.
