UNITED s'ra'rns PATENT OFFICE.
MAURICE A. PLATT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PASTEBOARD BOX.
Application filed March 18, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Maomcn A. PnA'r'r, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pasteboard Boxes, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to package boxes made of pasteboard, cardboard or like material, and the object thereof is to provide a box of this class with reinforcing tabs designed to prevent a cord by which the box is secured from cutting into or breaking the corners thereof.
The invention is fully disclosed in the fol lowing specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of an ordinary pasteboard box to which my improved tabs are applied; Fig. 2 a bottom plan view of said box; Fig. 3 a plan view of one form of my reinforcing tab; Fig. 4: an edge view of the device shown in Fig. 3, ready for use; Fig. 5 a back view of the tab shown in Fig. 41; and Fig. 6 a view similar to Fig. 3, but showing a modified form of tab.
The box shown consists of a bottom a and a top Z) and is held closed in the usual manner by a cord 0 and 0 To prevent this cord from cutting into the corners of the box I apply to said corners my reinforcing tabs (Z two forms of which are shown in Figs. 3 and 6.
The tab cl shown in Fig. 3 comprises a main body part (Z wider at one end than at the other and the narrower end thereof is pointed as shown at (Z to form a prong d" which is bent at right angles to the body portion (1 of the tab as shown in Fig. 4:. The wider end of the body portion (Z of the tab is provided with a projecting tongue (Z which is bent at right angles to said body portion as shown at d in Fig. 4, and in forming the tongue (Z the wider end of the body portion d of the tab is cut inwardly Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 12, 1912.
Serial No. 615,237.
on the opposite sides of the tongue to form projecting members (I and when said tongue is bent at right angles to the body as shown at ll a recess (Z is formed in the wider end of said body of the tab as shown in Fig. 5.
In the use of my improvement the pointed end (Z of the tab or tabs is passed inwardly through the sides of the box or the ends thereof as shown at. (1, while the bodies thereof lie flat on the sides of the box, or the ends thereof and the tongues (Z are bent t'ai'isversely over the corners of the box as shown at c and the cord 0 is passed around the tabs and through the recesses (Z in the wider ends thereof, and this holds the cord, where it crosses the corners of the box, in proper position and the tabs reinforce said corners so that the cord will not out thereinto or break or injure the box.
The prongs (Z' when passed inwardly through the material of the box may be clenched if desired as shown in Fig. 1, but this is not essential as the cord will hold the tabs in place when they are once connected with the box.
The form of tab shown in Fig. (3 has a wide and a narrow end portion and the narrow end portion is provided with two projecting prongs (Z and the tongue (Z is pointed and may be passed inwardly through the material of the box, if ('lesired.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z- The herein described reinforcing tab for pastteboard boxes, said tab being composed of sheet metal and being provided at one end with a point and at the opposite end with a projecting tongue which is adapted to be folded at right angles thereto and which when folded forms a recess in said end of the tab.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 17th day of March 1911.
