CASING FOR CENTRIFUGAL FANS AND PUMPS.
Specification 01 Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 12, 1912.
Application filed December 3, 1910. Serial No. 595,437.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS BERTRAM Cous- ANS, of Effingham House, Arundel street, London, England, engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Casings for Centrifugal Fans and Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to centrifugal fans and has for its object-to provide an improved construction of fan casing and pedestal.
The improved fan casing is constructed of sheet metal and I attach the edges or periphery to the sides by making a series of small slots in the sides and forming projecting tags on the edges or vice versa, the tags passing through the slots and being turned over after insertion, the joints in the corners being stiffened with strips of Wood or analogous material bent or straight-according to the shape of the case, these being nailed or screwed into position through the sides and edges of-the case. lVhere the pressures generated by the runner are low I may discard the slots and tags and rely wholly on the wood strips nailed or screwed into the corners for support. Outlets may be formed in the side or edges of the case.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one construction of the improved fan casing and support therefor; Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively sectional plan and side elevation of Fig. 1; and Figs. l, 5, 6, 7 and 8 show details of construction.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the drawings.
In the illustrated construction the fan casing is formed of sheet metal, the sides y being attached to the peripheral or connecting part h. by making a series of small slots 2' (Fig. 6) on one part and forming projecting tags j on the other part, the tags being passed through the slots and turned over after insertion as shown in Fig. 17. The joints in the angles are stiffened with strips of wood 76 or analogous material shown in Fig. 2, the said wooden strips being bent or straight according to the shape of the fan casing, and are nailed or screwed in position through the sides of the case as shown in Figs. 5 and 8.
Where the pressures generated by the fan runner are low I may discard the slots and tags and rely wholly on the wood strips 70 nailed or screwed into the corners for support (see Fig. 5) and the required outlets are formed in the sides or edges of the case. To improve the appearance, one edge may be headed over as at h.
In Figs. 1 to 3 each side of the casing 79 consists of four separate pieces of sheet metal m m m m suitably shaped and adapted to be assembled to form a complete side by being nailed or otherwise secured along the adjacent vertical edges 0 0 to vertical wood bars or battens p p. The fan casing when assembled is supported by attaching the said vertical wood bars 77 p to the vertical members Q (1 of an angle iron framework adapted to form on one side of the casing an extended platform Q for carrying the motor. The vertical members (1 q are as shown extended above the platform to the height of the wood bars 7) p, and the upper ends of the said members (1 may if desired be braced to the platform by struts or stays such as 1' to secure rigidity. In some cases the struts 7' may be disposed as shown in dotted lines.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A fan casing consisting of a body comprising side plates and a peripheral plate, one of said side plates being made in sections, wooden battens positioned outside of said casing for joining said sections together and a bracket for carrying a motor, said bracket comprising angle irons supporting said battens.
2. A fan casing consisting of a body comprising side plates and a peripheral plate, both of said side plates being made in sections, wooden battens positioned outside of said casing at each side thereof for joining said sections together and a bracket for carrying a motor, said bracket comprising angle irons adjacent both sides of the casing for supporting said battens.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS BERTRAM COUSANS.
Witnesses:
