To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JonN O. Pnnonn'r and HILAIRE PELCHAT, citizens of the United States, residing at Central Falls, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to hat pin guards, and has particular application to a certain novel and useful improvement in safety guards designed to cover the end of the pin.

In carrying out our invention it is our purpose to provide a simple, cheap and ornamental form of hat pin guard which may be readily applied to and removed from the hat and which will not interfere in any manner with the holding function of the pin.

Itis further our object to provide a guard having means contained therein whereby when the point or end of the pin is inserted in the guard, the pin will be securely retained in position, and when it is desired to remove the pin such removal may be accomplished by a simple manipulation of a means hereinafter described.

WVith the above recited objects and others of a similar nature in view, our invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawingseFigur-e 1 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through a hat pin guard embodying our improvement. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken onthe line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the letter A designates the body portion or casing of the guard which may be of metal or any other suitable material, and of any ornamental and preferred form. In the present instance we have shown the body or casing of an approximately pear shaped form, although we wish it to be understood that we do not limit ourselves to this precise structure. WVithin the enlarged or wider end of the casing we provide a transversely disposed block or stop 1, to which is connected a metallic strip or plate 2 which extends longitudinally of the body or casing. Soldered to or otherwise fastened to the side of this plate is a pin guide comprising a semi-circular groove section 3, and the eyes 4., one at. each side of the groove plate. To the outer side of the pin guide referred to is secured an angular plate bracket 5 having a laterally extending head 5 to which is secured one end of the pin 5 around which pin is coiled the helical spring 6, one end of the spring being secured at the head 5 while the opposite end of the spring is connected at 7 to the free end of the plate 8 which slides upon the pin. The opposite end of this plate 8 is formed with a lug or hook 9 projecting through an opening in the longitudinal plate 2 so that the small transverse plate 8 is movable or yieldingly secured to the member 2 at one end while it is movably connected to the pin 5 at the opposite end. The plate 8 is provided with an aperture 10 of sufficient size to permit passage of a pin, said aperture be ing normally out of alinement with the eyes 4l4 when the spring is expanded.

The numeral 11 designates a tubular member extending through the narrow open end of the body portion A and passing through the small ring or guide 12 extending outward from the plate 2, and in having its opening in alinement with the openings of the eyes l .l. This tubular member is also provided with shoulders or flanges 13--13, one at each end thereof.

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and manner of employing our improved hat pin guard will be readily apparent. When the point or shank of the pin is inserted in the guard, the tubular member will be pushed inward and in its travel the end adjacent to the flat transverse plate 8 will strike the same, bringing the latter into an approximately vertical position, and consequently bringing the opening 10 of said plate into alinement with the eyes l-4l so that the pin may travel simultaneously and easily along the semi-circular or grooved guide until the end abuts against the stop or block 1. lVhen the pressure has been released, the expansion spring will immediately act to cant or return the transverse plate in the direction of its normal position, thereby causing the latter to drop out of alinement with the eyes of the guide and consequently such plate will bind against the shank of the pin, thus firmly securing the same against dislodgment. At the same time, the spring 6 in returning the plate 8 will also force the tube 11 outwardly from the casing or body. lVhen it is desired to remove the pin, it is only necessary to press the exposed end of the tube inward when the plate will again be brought into alinement with the guide and the pin may be readily and quickly withdrawn.

It will be seen that we have provided a form of hat pin guard which, while not interfering with the wear or holding action of the pin, will at the same time cover the exposed end of the latter, thus consequently preventing persons from being injured by the sharp point.

What we claim is 1. A hat pin guide comprising a hollow body portion, a stop at one end thereof, a member extending longitudinally of the body portion, a hat pin guide carried by said member, a tubular member movable within the body portion, and a pin locking member normally held in locking position between the tubular member and the pin guide and adapted to be moved into nonlocking position by the tubular member when the latter is pressed against the same.

The combination with a hollow body portion, of a pin guide arranged therein comprising a grooved member and a plurality of guide eyes at each end of the grooved member, a tubular member movably mounted within the body portion, a perforated pin looking plate arranged between the tubular member and the pin guide, means normally holding said plate in looking position, said plate adapted to be moved into non-locking position when the tubular member is pressed against the same.

3. The combination with a tubular body portion, of a member extending longitudinally of the body portion, a plurality of guide eyes carried by said member, the member and eyes being adapted to receive the pointed end of a pin, a yielding plate connected to the longitudinally extending member and having an opening therein for the passage of the pin, a spring normally pressing said plate to hold the opening out oi alinement with the eyes, and a tubular member movable Within the body portion and adapted to bear against said plate to bring the opening therein into alinement with the eyes when the tubular member is pressed inward.
