To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that, Jol-IN L. TANDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cots or Couches, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to cots or couches of that type having collapsible head and foot frames as exemplified in Patent #1,006,147, issued to me Oct. 17, 1911, and my special object is to produce means whereby the downward movement of the hinged wings of said cot or couch to a substantially hori- Zontal position shall eect the elevation or raising of the head and foot frames.

Vith this general object in view and others as hereinafter appear, the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar featuresof construction and organization as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is an end view of a cot or couch embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a detail perspective view of one of a pair of slotted links forming a part of t-he head and foot frames. Fig. 3, is an end view of a part of a cot or couch embodying the invention of a different construction from that shown in Fig. 1.

In the said drawings, 1 is the body or framework of a cot or couch and 2 are wings hinged to opposite sides of the end bars ofn said body or framework, the drawings showing only one end of the device as the other end is a duplicate thereof, and for convenience in the future reference to the device, the end shown is assumed to be the head end of the cot and the collapsible frame is assumed to be the head frame.

33 indicates transversely extending arch or upwardly bowed bars arranged side by side and crossing each other as viewed, the lower ends of said bars being pivoted to and near the extremities of the end bar of the body or framework.

and framework and bars 33 and constituting 1n conjunction with the latter, a collapsible head frame. The links 34 are extended below their pivotal points of connection with links so that such extensions may engage at times the stops 41, which by preference are the pins or pivots upon which the wings 2 are mounted, and said links 34 are provided with longitudinal slots 3G terminating at their upper ends and outer sides in notches 37. The said links are provided near the lower ends and at the outer sides of said slots with notches 3S.

39 are bars pivoted at their outer or lower ends to the adjacent end bars of the wings and provided at their upper ends with pins 40 fitting and capable of travel in slots 3G and of seating in said notches 37 or 38.

In Fig. 3, the collapsible head frame shown as consisting of arched or upwardly bowed bars 42 pivoted to the body or framework like bars 33, a pair of toggles connecting each bar 42 with the body or framework, and a link connecting each pair of toggles. One pair of the toggles comprises links 43 and 44 and the other pair links and 4G, and the lower ends of the links 46 are extended and adapted for engagement with stop pins 47 projecting from the body or framework.

48 are substantially horizontal links pivotally connecting the jointed ends of the two pairs of toggles and projecting outwardly beyond the same and provided with longitudinal slots 49 terminating at their outer ends and lower sides in notches 50, and said links are provided near the inner ends of said slots and at the lower sides of the same with notches 51.

52 are pins fitting slidingly in said slots and adapted to engage either of 'said notches andcarried by and at the upper or inner ends of a pair of bars 53 pivoted at their outer ends to the end portions of the wings.

When the wing of the construction shown by Fig. 1, is raised from the position shown at the left hand side of said figure, the pin 40 of bar 39 slides downward in slot 36, and as the wing attains approximately the position shown in dotted lines, pin 40 enters notch or socket 38. The wing is then lowered and through the pull on bar 39 or link 34, the toggle is expanded and raises the connected bar 33, the lower end of link 34 coming in contact with the stop pin 41 CII and arresting the wing the saine attains a horizontal position, as shown at the right hand side of Fig. l.

To relower the wing it is first raised high enough to permit pin 40 to move out of notch or socket 8S and fall down into slot S6, and then a quick downward movement ot the wing reverses the movement of the pin et() and causes the same to jump past the notch 3S after which the wing may tall or may be lowered to its original or pendent position as shown at the lett hand side of F ig. l.

The action in the construction shown in F ig. 3, is substantially the same, that is as the wing is raised from a pendent position pin 59, is lifted out ot notch or socket 50 and slides `inward in slot 49 until it drops into notch or socket 5l, atI which time the wing has been raised above a horizontal position. The wing is then lowered and in such action pulls outward on link 48 and thus effects the expansion of the toggles and the elevation of the connected bar 4x2, the downward movement of the wing being checked by the engagement of the extended end of the link 46 with the stop pin 47.

To relower the wing it is first raised to move the pin 52 out of notch or socket 5l to a position inward of said notch or socket. A quick downward movement of the wing then causes said pin to move outward and jump over said notch or socket. After which the wing if released will fall to a pendent position or may be lowered to such position.

From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a cot or couch embodying the features of advantage enumerated as desirable and I wish it to be understood that while I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, I reserve the right to make all changes properly falling within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

l. The combination with a cot or couch having a body and a. wing hinged to one side of the body, of a head or foot frame consisting of a bar hinged to the body, and means whereby downward movement of the wing to a horizontal position shall eiiect th`e elevation or raising of the head or foot frame.

2. The combination with a cotor couch having a body and a wing hinged to one side of the body, of a head or foot frame consisting of a bar hinged to the body, means whereby downward movement of the wing to a horizontal position shall effect the elevation or raising of the head or foot frame, and means for locking said head or toot trame and said wing in elevated or horizontal position.

3. The combination with a cot or couch having a body and a wing hinged to one side of the body, of a head or foot frame consisting of a bar hinged to the body, a toggle connecting said bar with the body, and means pivoted to the'wing and bearing a slidable relation to said toggle and adapted as the wing is moved to impart expanding or collapsing movement to said toggle to effect elevation or lowering respectively of the head frame.

il. The combination with a cot or couch having a body and a wing hinged to one side of the body, of a head or foot frame consisting of a bar hinged to the body, a toggle connecting said bar with the body, means pivoted to the wing and bearing a slidable relation to said toggle and adapted as the wing is moved to impart expanding or collapsing movement to said toggle to effect elevation or lowering respectively of the head frame, and means for limiting expanding movementI of the toggle as the wing in moving downward attains a horizontal position.

5. The combination with a cot or couch having a body and a wing hinged to one side of the body, of a head or toot frame consisting of a bar hinged tofthe body, a toggle connecting said bar with the body, a bar pivotally connecting the wing with one of the links ot the toggle and bearing a slidable relation thereto, and means for limiting the expansive or opening movement ot' the toggle.

G. The combination with a cot or couch having a body and wings hinged to the opposite sides of the body, of a head or toot frame consisting of a pair ot crossed bars each hinged at one end to the body, a toggle connecting the opposite or free end of each bar to the body, a bar pivotally connecting each wing to one of the toggles and bearing a sliding relation to the latter, and means for limiting the expansive or opening movement of each toggle.
