IRONING TABLE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 14, 1910.
Patented Mar. 5, 1912.
INVENTORS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAXMILLIAN E. PRIMBS AND PHILLIP J..IBITTNER, F RESERVE TOWNSHIP, ALLEGHENY COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA.
momma-TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 5, 1912.
Application filed March 14, 1910. Serial No. 549,215
-in Reserve township, in thecounty of Al legheny and StateT'of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to ironing tables, and the objects of our invention are to provide an ironing board with a collapsible support, and to furnish an ironing board with simple and effective means for detachably securing a cover to the board.
Other objects of our invention are to provide a. support-for an ironing board that can be used for holding one end thereof in connection wit-h another support or adjusted to completely support the board, and to provide an ironing table that can be easily handled and set up by a Woman to furnish a rigid ironing surface."
Other objects of our invention are to accomplish the aboi e results by an ironing table that is simple in construction, free from injury by ordinary use and highly efiicient for the purposes for Whichis is intended, and to provide a collapsible support that can be used in connection with various types of ironing boards.
With these and such other objects in view as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a table, showing the same in a set up position, Fig. 2 is a bottom plan of the table, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the table, showing the same folded, Fig. 4 is an end view of a portion of the table, Fig. 5 is an enlarged elevation of a portion of the board support. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the board. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary detail view showing the set screw 12 in clamping engagement with the rod 8, and Fig.8 is a fragmentary detail view showing the connection of supporting members with the foot member;
In the accompanying drawing the reference numeral 1 denotes an oblong tapering board having .the under side thereof adjacent to the large end of thp board provided with depending bearings Trunnioned in the bearings 2 is the cross head 3' of a standard 4, said standard having the lower end thereof provided with a transverse foot- 5. The standard 4 adjacent to the foot 5 is provided with a bracket 6 and pivotally mounted in said bracket by a pin 7 is a leg, comprising a tube 8 adapted to receive a rod 9 having the outer end thereof provided with a transverse foot 10. Mounted upon the tube 8 is a T 11 and mounted in the T is a set screw 12 adapted to engage the rod 9 and retain the same in a closed position within the tube 8.
Connected with the standard 1 intermediate the ends thereof and to the T11 are toggles, said toggles comprising pivoted arms 13 and 14 having the ends thereof. pivo-tally connected togther, as at 15 with the ends of the arms 13 provided with pins 16 adapted to engage in slots 17 provided therefor in the upper end of the arms 1-1.
The foot 5 adjacent to the ends thereof is provided with apertured lugs 18 and pivotally connected to said lugs is an inverted V-shaped brace 19 having the apex thereof provided with a tooth 20 adapted to extend upwardly into' an opening 21 provided therefor in the large end of the board 1.
The brace rods 19 are also secured at their lower ends to the lugs 18 and are secured at their opposite ends to the opposite sides of the standard 4. The wall of the opening 21 is recessed, as at 22 to'receive a casing 23 containing a spring pressed latch 24 adapted to engage the toothed end of the brace 19. The casing 23 and the latch 24 are of a conventional form and a knob or handle 25 is employed for moving the latch 24 to release the toothed end of the brace 19. Pivotally connected to the brace 19 contiguous to the toothed end thereof is a V- shaped member 26 having the ends thereof pivotally mounted in depending eyes 27 carried by the board 1.
Secured to the under side of the board 1 by plates 28 are the inner ends of a plu- .rality of retractile springs 29, and these retractile springs have the outer ends thereof provided with books 30 adapted -to engage the longitudinal edges of the board 1.
Aftera suitable cover 31 is placed upon the board, the hooks30 of the springs 29 can be placed in engagement with the edges of the board 1 .to retain the cover in an [adjusted andtaut positionupon the board.
The s'up' prt in its entirety is preferably made of flight and durable metal such as pipes or tubes, the. feet comprising pipes having the ends thereof provided withelbows, While the outer end of tlfe leg is connected-to the foot bya T and the upper end ofthe standard am the cross head 3 by another T. v
To fold-the ironing table, it is only necessary to tilt the same until the board rests upon the large'end thereof. The tube 8 and rod 9 can then be closed and held in a closed position by 'the set screw1 2. The
latch 24 can then be moved torelease the toothed end of the brace 19 and then the toggles folded to swing the leg into parallelism with the standard 4. The standard 4 can then be swung upwardly into parallelism with the under side of the board 1.
'It is thought that the utility and manner A of setting up the table will be apparent connected to said standard adjacent to said foot, a leg extension adjustably mounted in adapted to engage in the end of said leg, toggles connecting said leg with said standar and a brace pivotally connected to the footvof said standard and saidboard, substantially as described. 9
2. The combination of an ironing board,
'de ending bearings carried bysaid board ad acent to the large end thereof, a standard trunnioned in said bearings, a foot carried by the lower end of said standard, a leg pivotally connected to said standard ad- 'jacent to said foot, toggles connecting sai 7 ivotally' leg with said standard, a brace connected with said foot, and a late carried by the large end' of said board and adapted to engage the upper end of said brace.
3. The combination of an ironing board,
depending bearings carried by said board adjacent to the large end thereof, a standard having the upper end thereof trunnioned in said bearings, a leg pivotally connected to the lower end of said standard, toggles pivotally connected to said standard and to said leg, means adapted to brace the lower end of said standard relatively to the large end of said board, said means including'a V-shaped brace adapted to have the 'upper end thereof extend into said board,
a V-shaped member pivotally'connected to the under side of said board and to the upvper side of said brace, and a latch arranged in said board and adapted to engage the upper end of said brace.
In testimony whereof 'we afiix our signatures in the presence oftwo witnesses.
