Description

dinard stt-aire @aient Citywire;
ROBERT JEWELL, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 101,882, dated April 12, 1870; antedated April 4, 1870.
IMPRQVED BEDS'IIELAD` AND LOUNGE.
The Schedule referred coin these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'kuown that I, ROBERT JEWELL, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Combined Bedsteads, Lounges, 85e.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l .of-thedrawings'is a representation of a central vertical longitudinal section of my invention.
Figure 2 isa front view of same. A
Figure 3 is a detached view of desk, in section.
My invention relates to household furniture; and
It consists, mainly, in a novel combination and arrangement of devices intended t0 serve as a combined bedstead, lounge, writingdesk, and receptacle for clothing.
' A of the drawings represents an upright case, with closed rear and sides, in which the bunk B is hinged at the point a, in the manner shown on iig. 1. This case is so arranged that when the bedstead is raised vto a perpendicular position the covered bottom O- is flush with the' fiout of the sides.
C represents the bottom o'f the bedstead, covered with ornamental cloth, but having also a looking-glass, E', arranged in it, as shown on iig. 2. XVhen the bedstead is lowered for duty it assumes the position shown on iig. 1, thebot-tom C being entirely removed from sight.
l,E of the drawings represents two sections of molding, pivoted, respectively, to the front side of the top of the swinging case or hunk that holds the bed, and which, when the bed is lowered, are made to serve as legs for the same. When u'sed as such legs, these pivoted moldings are respectively turned until they assume aperpendicular position, and their upper ends are passed into suitable mortises cut in the hinged plate c, which is attached to the rear part of the upper end of said bunk, as shown.
lo hold the bunk. in place when the same is sct vertically in its case, I arrange hooks and eyes, as shown on lig. 1 at the point d.
On the front side of case A and toward its bottom I arrange the lounge G in the manner shown on iig. 2..
It consists of a cushioned seat, connected at each end with standards or head-rests H.
Immediately below this lounge, and extending rearward to the extreme rear side of case A, I arrange the drawer K, in such manner that it may be moved inward or outward at will in the usual manner of bureau drawers.
I also arrange the short drawer L under said lounge, and with it the devices next mentioned intended for conversion into a writing-desk, when desirable so to do.
In order to comprehend this convertible writingdesk, I refer the reader to iig.' 3 of the drawings, which represents the desk at duty.
L represents the drawer, with its hinged lid 71..
P is a brace, placed at one end of thedrawer, and having its lower end passed downward into an opening in the plate i.
It is a supporting-rod, hooked into the side of brace vI and pivoted to the Side ofthe drawer in such manner as to'be removable at will.
A duplicate of Athis brace-rod and plate is arranged at the opposite end of the drawer or desk. v
It will readily be perceived that when the drawer is not iu use as a desk the braces and rods may be released, and the entire apparatus passed inward with the drawer. When the desk -is in place the lounge serves es a seat or writing or reading purposes.
IVhat I claim as my invention, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-
. The combined bedstead, lounge, and writing-desk herein described, having case A, bunk B, bottom C, moldings E, hinged plate c, lounge G, drawers K and L, lid h, brace I, aud rod R, constructed and arranged as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have -hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT J EVV'ELL.
