CUSPIDOR.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BRONISLAW BARTOSIE- WICZ, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Glen Cove, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to cuspidors, and the objects of my invention are to provide a cuspidor with a novel mouthpiece or spout that will prevent the contents thereof from being spilled when the cuspidor is accidentally tilted or upset, and to provide a cuspidor that can be easily and quickly cleaned and maintained in a sanitary condition.

Further oj ects of my invention are to provide a cuspidor that can be advantageously used in public places where such receptacles are liable to be tilted or upset, and the carpet or floor spoiled or ruined, and to provide a cuspidor consisting of comparatively few parts easy to manufacture and inexpensive to produce.

The above objects are attained by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the cuspidor, and Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.

A cuspidor in accordance with this invention can be spun or otherwise produced from light and durable metal, the cuspidor comprising a shell 1 having an integral flat bottom 2 and a flared neck 3. The flared neck 3 is formed integral with an inwardly projecting annular inclined flange 4 and this flange has the inner edge thereof depressed to provide an annular seat 5 for a gasket 6. The gasket 6 is preferably made of rubber and has an annular depending portion 7 to engage the upper end of a funnel-shaped spout 8 mounted in the opening formed by the annular seat 5. The lower end of the spout 8 extends into close proximity to the flat bottom 2 of the shell 1, and the upper end thereof has an annular rim 9 Serial No. 649,669.

resting upon the gasket 6. The rim 9 engages the vertical walls 10 of the seat 5 and said rim is retained upon the gasket by oppositely disposed clips 11. These clips are pivotally connected by pins 12 to the flange 4, and the inner ends of said clips are notched, as at 13 whereby said clips can be easily shifted to one side to release the rim 9 of the spout 8. The outer endsof the clips are angularly disposed to engage the flange 4: and the inner ends thereof are horizontally disposed to engage the top of the rim 9.

The rim 9, at diametrically opposed points, is provided with eyes 13 and loosely connected to said eyes are the hook-shaped ends 14 of a bail 15. This bail permits of the funnel-shaped spout 8 being removed without soiling the hands, and when the clips 11 are swung inwardly to engage the rim 9, the spout 8 cannot become accidentally displaced and cooperates with the walls of the shell 1 in providing an annular compartment 16. It is in this compartment that the contents of the receptacle flow when said cuspidor is tilted or upset, and as the lower end of the spout 8 is just of sufficient area to permit of spittle and other matter entering the shell 1, it is practically impossible for matter to pass out of the small end of the spout when the cuspidor is upset.

When the spout 8 is removed, the inte rior of the cuspidor can be thoroughly cleaned, and when the cuspidor is in position upon the gasket 6, a non-leakable connection is formed between the spout and the shell 1, whereby the contents of the compartment 16 cannot flow between the spout 8 and the seat 5 when the cuspidor is upset.
