HERMANN FOLKES, SR., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DEVICE FOR CLEANSING- CUTLERY AND THE LIKE.
Lois-3,753.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN FoLiiEs, Sr., a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Cleansing Cutlery and the Like, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
This invention relates to a cleansing device for cutlery, the object being to provide a simple device of this character which is adapted to retain the cleansing element, and which Vis also adapted to support the article to be cleansed, during the cleansing operation.
I will now proceed to describe my invention in detail, the novel features of which I will finally point out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, wherein:
Figure 1 is an end view of my improved device; Fig. 2 is a sectional top plan view on a reduced scale, the section being taken on a line 2 -2 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of my improved device on a reduced scale; and Fig. 4 is an end view of my improved device embodied in another form.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 in Fig. 1 indicates a block provided, at each end thereof, with vertically disposed slots 2, (see also Fig. 2). Adjacent each slot 2, and disposed longitudinally of the block 1, I provide openings 8, through which a bolt 4 is adapted to pass, the said bolt being threaded at one end and provided with a wing nut 5.
In order to retain a cake of a cleansing element such, for instance, as sapolio, bon ami, and the like, upon the block 1, I provide the said block with channel members or brackets 6, which are designed to hold the block of the cleansing element, as shown in Fig. 3, the said block or cake of cleansing element, being indicated by the numeral 7.
In order that the article to be cleansed can be supported adjacent the cleansing ele- Specification of Letters Patent.

S with slots 12 through which the bolt 4 passes. The support 8 may be firmly held in an adjusted position upon'the block 1 by means of the wing nut 5, or it may be slidably secured to the block by unscrewing the wing nut or in other words by keeping the wing nut out of contact with the bracket. The support 8 may be shifted to any of the slots 2 to accommodate cakes of different sizes, the bolt 4 being also shifted to the opening adjacent that slot 2 in which the support 8 is positioned.
The modified form of device illustrated in Fig. 4 comprises a block 12, having a bolt 13, the said bolt being provided with a wing nut 14. To support the cleansing element, the block 12 is provided with brackets l5, the cleansing element being indicated by 16. The support for the article to be cleansed comprises a top or table port-ion 16, having dependingl sides 17, one only being shown, the said sides bein-g provided with a slot 18, through which the bolt 13 passes. In this form of device the support 16a may be iirmly secured to the block 12, or it may restupon the cleansing element by gravity, and consequently lower as the cake is worn away. To adapt the support 16a to lower by gravity, the wing nut 14 will be removed from the bolt 13, or kept out of contact therewith.
The device is used as follows: Should it be desired to cleanse a knife, for instance, the same is placed on the table 9 and held in contact with the latter with one hand, while with the other hand, the cleansing element is applied with a cloth or the like; or the cloth may be applied to the blade by a sliding movement from the cleansing element across or along the blade.
Having now described my invention, wha t I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A cleansing device for cutlery or the like, comprising a block. adapted to support the cleansing element, said block being provided with vertical slots in each end thereof, said block being also provided with openings longitudinally thereof, a table adapted to support the article to be cleansed, said table comprising a top and end flanges, said end flanges being provided with a slot, a rib carried by said end flanges adapted to slidably it the vertical slot in the ends of said block, a bolt adapted to pass through the openings in said block and the slots in the end CIT A said block adapted to retain a cleansing element, a support for the article to be cleansed comprising an upper or table portion and depending sides provided with a slot, a bolt carried by said block adapted to pass through the slots in the sides of said support, and a Wing nut carried by said bolt.
3. A cleansing device for cutlery, coniprising a block, means thereon for retaining a cleansing element, and a support for the article to be cleansed consisting of an upper or table port-ion, having depending sides removably secured to the ends of said block, said support being adapted for adjustment vertically over and also transversely of the block.
