To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY HERBERT YELF, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Southsea, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, have invented new and useful Improvements Relating to Holders for Erasers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to holders for ink or pencil erasers and has for its object to provide an improved device for this purpose which shall be simple in construction and more eificient in operation than devices of the kind heretofore made.

Erasers of the circular or oblong pattern usually employed possess many disadvantages, they are continually in contact with the fingers of the user and become speedily soiled. After a little wear the bulk of the eraser is diminished and when half worn down becomes too small to handle conveniently and in the case of erasers of oblong pattern it is not feasible to erase individual letters neatly when the points become worn as the edge presented in these circumstances is usually of considerable width.

Now in accordance with my present invention I provide an eraser holder in which the eraser is adapted to be contained in such a manner that a small portion only thereof projects when in use the remaining portion being inclosed and so protected frombeing soiled or otherwise damaged.

In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated an eraser holder embodying my invention in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved device, Fig. 2 is a similar view with one of the side walls removed to better illustrate the construction and arrangement of parts. Fig. 3 is a view of the eraser proper hereinafter referred to, and Fig. 4; is a detail view. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.

My improved holder comprises a case a of metal, celluloid or other suitable material in one of the side walls of which a slot Z) is formed, the end 0 of the casing a being open as shown in Fig. 2. Mounted within the casing a is a rack d normally retained in the position shown in Fig. 2 by a leaf spring 0 or equivalent means. Mounted to slide within the casing a is a member f having a handle 9 projecting through the slot 3) so forming a guide for said member f in its passage up and down the case a. The said member f forms the means for securing the eraser proper h, said member f being formed with a projecting knob or the like 71 adapted to engage with a holding recess of corresponding shape formed in the end of the eraser h. The member f is provided with a projecting pin f adapted to engage with the teeth of the rack d which is preferably formed of the shape shown in Fig. 2 and provided with a stud is projecting through the case a and serving to depress the rack against the resistance of the spring 6 to release the pin carried by member f so permitting this latter to be slid along the case thus projecting more or less the eraser h from the end of the case.

It will be obvious that with my improved device the eraser it may be moved forward at regular intervals at will to take up the wear as necessary until exhausted while a refill may be instantly engaged with the knob i of the member f by pushing the re cessed holding end 1' of the eraser into engagement with the knob 71. It will hold the eraser firmly and rigidly in all positions and is under thorough control of the operator while in use. I may, if desired, form a seal l at the end of the case a.

The eraser h for use with my improved holder is made comparatively thin so as to present an edge adapted to erase single letters or small spaces without touching adjacent letters such as, for instance, when used with a typewriter.

I claim:

1. An eraser holder comprising a casing open at one end, an elastic eraser adjustably mounted therein, and having at one end a recess formed by resilient arms projecting from the eraser body, a member for advancing the eraser to a working position and releasably interlocking with said recess, and means for locking the same against backward movement.
