UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
SAMUEL DARLING, OE PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
CALlPER-RU LE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,104, dated I une 14, 1892.
Application filed October 6,1891. Serial No. 407,929. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom iv' may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL DARLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new an d useful Improvement in Caliper-Rules, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in an improved device for fastening the caliper-slide in any desired position, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure l represents a side View of a caliperrule provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section taken in the line 0c x of Figs. I and 2. Fig. El represents a longitudinal section taken in the line y y of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the body of the rule, and B the caliperslide, which is provided with the ordinary grad u ations, and Within a vrecess c, made in the body A, is placed the gib b, which is adapted to bear against the edge a of the slide B, and at the back of the gib b, in the perforation d, which extends from side to side of the body A, is placed the cam O, formed by the eccentric c and the groove f, which embraces the edge of the gib L, and thus prevents the removal of the cam. The cam O is provided at one side of the rule with l[he arm g, by means ot' which the said cam may be turned, so as to press the gib b firmly against the edge of the slide B to hold the same securely in position, and when the arm g is turned in the opposite direction the slide will be released from pressure, so that the said slide may be moved to any desired position. The arm gis so arranged relatively to the cam O that when the rule is properly held in the hand for use the said arm can be readily manipulated in either direction by the action of the thumb or finger.
I claim as my invention- I. The combination, With the body of the rule, provided with a transverse circular perforation, the caliper-slide, and the gib adapted to bear against the edge of the slide, of the cam held in the circular perforation and provided With a groove which embraces the edge of the gib, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the body of the rule, provided with a transverse circular perforation, the caliper-slide, and the gib adapted to bear against the edge of the slide, of the cam held in the circular perforation and provided with a groove which embraces the edge of the gib and the arm whereby the proper movement may be imparted to the cam, substantially as described.
