APPLIGATION FILED 00127, 1911.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Bor R. RINGER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dispensing-Boxes, of which the following is Ia specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. This invention relates to dispensing boxes, cans and'otlier receptacles, and t-he primary object of my invention is the provision of positive and reliable means, in a manner as.
will be hereinafter set forth, for dispensing or discharging small quantities of dry substances as smoking tobacco, toilet powder,v
coifee, salt and granular material without loss of the substances or material, as experienced with most receptacles heretofore.
A further object of this invention is to provide an outlet spout that can be advantageously used in connection with tobaccovrece tacles wliereb the user can discharge a .V s
' from the receptacle sufficient. tobacco for use in making a cigarette, or for filling pipe bowls, thereby preventing tobacco from being spilled by a too large quantity iiowing from the box.
A further object of this invention is to provide acan'with a discharge spout that obviates the necessity of removingl the lid of the can in order to obtain the contents thereof, the discharge spout being arranged whereby a receptacle, as a tobacco can, can be sealed in the ordinary and well known manner.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a receptacle with a one-piece discharge spout that can be opened to regulate the flow of granular matter from a. recepta cle, thereby saving'considerable time and economizing in the use of the contents of the receptacle.
A still further object of this invention is to accomplish the above results by a inechanical construction that is simple, durable, inexpensive to manufacture and highly eilicient for the purposes for which it is intended.
With the above and other objects in vievv the invention resides in the novel construction, combination andl arangement of partsto be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing wherein there is illustrated a preferred em- Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 1912.
I Application filed October 27, 1911. Serial No. 657,110.
tion, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional,v
view of the same. l
In Figs. l and 2 there is illustrated a tobacco box, comprising a bottom larcuate in plan and provided with vertically extending side walls 2 concave upon one side,
as at 3 to conform to the arcuate bottoni so that the receptacle can be conveniently carried in the pocket, conforming to the contour of the body. Mounted upon the upper edges of the side walls 2 is a detachable lid 4. The receptaclejust described if of the Yordinary and well known type used by various tobacco manufacturers, and my invention does not reside in theconstruction ofthe box so far described. The end wall of the box has a rectangular dispensing opening 5 with the material bordering upon the lower edge of the opening bent to provide an outwardly extending single barrel 6. Pivotally connected to the barrel 6 by a pin 7 are the barrels 8 of a discharge spout 9. The discharge spout 9 is made of a single piece of material, as tin, similar tothe box or can.Y The lower edge of the spout is curved to conform to the curvature of the end wall of the box or can, and the upper edge of the spout is reained, as at l0 to obviate a sharp edge, also to provide a nger piece that permits of the spout being easily opened. The discharge spout has vertical and substantially triangular shaped side walls 11 with the inner upper edges thereof provided with stop lugs 12 adapted to engage the inner upper edge of the opening 5 and limit the opening movement of the spout.
After the spout has been pivotally connected or hinged to the end wall of the can or box, at the lower edge of the opening 5, the material bordering upon the vertical edges of the opening 5 is pressed inwardly to frictionally engage the outer sides of the walls 11 of the spout, whereby the spoilt Will be rietionally held in adjusted position. For instance, the spout een be pertizilly opened to present si smell diseharge opening when :i small. quantity of the oontents of the boi; or erin is di ed, or Seid spout een be completely opened to allow the contents of the can or bor. to freely flow from the saine.
The opening 5 is located adjacent to the upper end of the box and in the end Woll thereof, whereby the entire contents oie. the box or Cani can be obtained. lurthernior the smne Government stomp 'or seul used in Connection with the lid l @an here u portion thereof or none end extendingV on to the discharge spoil@ whereby the spoutennnot be opened Without the stamp or seal being broken.
'lhe inrention not limited to :i tobiieoo receptacle, as it con be embodied in a oylin4 drionl receptacle 13 employed for beddinggranular or 4powdered matter. Should the receptacle be lined the liningr een be prorided with un opening registering' with the opening 5. lWhile the discharge spout is inside' of light sind durable nietnl, the receptaele in eonneetion with which it is used can be inode of other material than nietnl.
What I claim is- A dispensing box comprising en orolmienne l Shaped body portion haring n removable lid, a closed bottom and further having" a dispensing opening,r in the upper portion of one of its sides, a spout comprisingn 'front conforming' in contour to the shape of o 35 side of Said body and having its lower end hinged at the lower edge of said opening and its upper end bent outwardly to pro ride o iinger piece, lsaid spout further in eluding,` o pair of triengular-Shnped side wells Carried by und projecting inwardly ,from the sides of Suid front, and projections carried by the upper inner Corners oi, Suid Walls und capable of engaging the material bordering upon the upper edge ot said open- 4 ing for limiting the opening inorei'nent of Suid discharge spout, said body having the material bordering' upon the vertical ed' of the opening pressed inwardly to frictionnlly engage seid side =i` :ills whereby seid spout can be maintained in an adjusted po eition to regulate the diseharge ot the oontents of the box.
ln testimony'whereof I al'lix my Signature in the pregenee of two Witnesses.
