Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 23, 1911.
Patented Feb. 20, 1912.
Serial No. 610,373.
I '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. EDMoNDs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Athol, in the county of Smith and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hay-Racks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in Hay-Racks and the leading object of my invention is the provision of a simple, cheap and durable rack which can be instantly applied to the bolsters or gear of an ordinary wagon, and which will fulfil the functions of a hay rack in a thoroughly etficient and practical manner.
Another object of my invention is the provision of means adapted to be secured upon the bolsters of a wagon which means will possess the necessary strength, and which can be quickly adjusted to the bolsters or removed therefrom as desired, but which means could not become detached accidentally.
To attain the desired objects my invention consists broadly speaking in the combination with the bolsters of a wagon, of rails forming the rack and carrying adjustable clamps for securing the rack upon the bolsters.
The invention further consists of an at tachment embodying novel features of construct-ion and combination of parts substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of my complete hay rack attachment in position upon the bolsters, the wheels and parts of the running gear being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 represents an elevation of one of the clamps, part of one of the side rails of the rack and the bolster, the device being clamped in position upon the bolster, which bolster is shown in section.
Referring by letter to the drawings: The letter A designates the wheels, B the running gear, C the frames having the curved wagon guards or fenders D, all of Well known construction.
The bolsters E have mounted thereon the usual standards F, and my device is secured upon the bolsters. The device proper consists of the pair of flat bars or plates G, having openings H to receive fastenings J for securing the bars to the pair of side rails K, and said bars are bent at L from a longitudinal plane and terminate in the vertical transverse arms M. I employ four sets of these plates and between the pairs of arms M, is secured the yoke N, upon which is supported and is adjusted the clamping head 0, which is operated upon by the adjusting and clamping screw P, having a head Q, to receive a Wrench.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawing it will be observed that four of my devices are secured upon the pair of rails and that the yokes fit upon the bolsters and the clamps are adjusted to secure the yokes firmly in position and while it is absolutely impossible for the rack to Work loose or become detached, yet the rack can be instantly removed or applied when found desirable.
It will be appreciated that my device can be sold for a very small price and can be attached by any person to a pair of rails of any width desired. It will also be seen that my device would enable the building quickly of a wagon body or bed, as rails or strips could be easily supported on the bolsters to form the bottom of the body and the rails would form the sides. Also the device can be made of wrought iron or other material in any size desired and that in every respect the 1device is eflicient and useful and practica It will be observed that the yoke of my device fits snugly over the bolsters and that the arms of the yoke are reinforced or doubled in strength by the plates which have one part secured to the yokes and the other part bent to fit and be secured to the rack and that this bend also forms a protection for the adjusting screw by covering the screw and preventing hay from falling in the way of the screw, thus placing the screw in an accessible position.
I claim:
In a device of the character described, the combination with the bolsters and side rails of a vehicle, of a yoke fitting upon said bolsters, said yoke having a longitudinally disposed portion extending at right angles to said bolsters and a pair of depending vertically disposed arms formed integral with and extending downwardly at right angles to said longitudinal portion, a clamping plate slidably mounted upon said yoke and having a transverse aperture therein through which said longitudinally extending port-ion of the yoke extends to permit said clamping head to depend vertically therefrom, a pair plate whereby the device may be secured in 10 of apertured plates having their longitudiproper position upon the bolsters.
nally disposed portions secured to the side In testimony whereof I aflix my signature rails of the vehicle and their vertically disin presence of two Witnesses.
posed portions depending downwardly and resting against the vertically disposed arms JOHN E. EDMONDS. of the yoke, and means passing through one Witnesses:
of said vertically disposed arms of said T. E. LEEPER,
plates and abutting against said clamping J. H. EDMoNDs.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
