UNITED STATES PATEN T ()FFICE.
GEORGE E. PRENTICE, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO TRAUT AND HINE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORA- TION.
CAST-OFF.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. PRENTICE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in Cast-Offs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cast offs and the objects of my improvements are simplicity and economy in construction and convenience and efliciency in use.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure l is a front elevation of my cast off with a cant-ab strap and part of a webbing. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of my castofi' on the line a w of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the same on the line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the blank for my webbing plate. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of my strap plate adapted for use with a double strap. Fig. 6 is a front elevation of my strap plate adapted for an ordinary single strap. Fig. 7 is a similar view of my strap plate provided with a cord eye.
A is the webbing member of my cast off as applied to suspenders and comprises a generally flat piece of sheet metal provided in the upper part with a webbing receiving slot 11, the upper wall of which constitutes a top bar 12 around which is looped the webbing C. Integral with the said body 10 and at the ends of the lower bar 13 thereof is a pair of downwardly directed lugs 15 which are essentially a downward continuation of the side walls 16 of the said webbing receiving slot 11. Said lugs are each provided with a finger directed inwardly toward the center and separated from the said tie bar 13 by a shear out 17 and from the other finger by a space 18 representing surplus material that is unnecessary for the formation of engaging members suitable for my purpose; said engaging members are formed by rolling outward laterally and preferably frontwise the ends of the fingers 14 as found in the blank so as to form cylindrical rolls 14 one on each side. There may be a backward set of the said tie bar 13 and the attached lugs 15 with reference to the top bar 12 in order to bring the alinement of the strap D attached to the strap member B to conform with that of the webbing C attached to the webbing member A Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 23, 1909.
Patented Feb. 20, 1912. Serial No. 519,139.
as described by a suitable bending of the side bars 16 of the webbing member A, as shown at 19, Fig. 2. Detaching fulcrums 20 may be provided below. said engaging members 14 comprising essentially downward extensions of said lugs 15 for a suitable distance to provide a fulcrum for convenience in disengaging the strap member B from the webbing member A.
The strap member B shown in Fig. 6 comprises a flat plate of sheet metal having a slot 31 therein inclosed at the sides by lateral bars 32 and at the top by a cross bar con stituting an upper stiffening or tie bar 33. The inner edges 34 of the said lateral bars 32 constitute bearing edges which engage with the rolled engaging portion 14 of the webbing member. The lower side of said slot is closed by a bar 22 having a strap receiving depression 29 limited laterally bythe edges 30. A slot 25 may be provided in the bar 22, as shown in Fig. 5 for use with a double strap. In operation as the strap member B is forced home against the front face of the webbing member A the said edges 34 engage with the outer sides of the said rolled engaging members 14, spring the same inwardly until past the center of the rolled edge, after which point is reached the resiliency of the rolled edges and the material of the respective members cooperate to bring the said members-home in the engaged position. By having the edge 34 beveled brings the engaging points in the home position lower down with reference to the said rolled edge 14 and makes the engagement more reliable and secure, and by having the beveling on both sides as shown in Fig. 3 the said strap plate B is reversible. The beveling of the said edge 34 is the only feature of the strap member B requiring attention to produce the said member finished from the blank.
In case a single cordis used in place of a flat strap there may be provided a cord eye 35 attached to the lower bar 22 of the plate 13.
My cast off as described is made of two pieces complete, is simple and reliable, is essentially flat, without exposed sharp points and is particularly short in up and down length and in the extent of material used, especially for the cantab arrangement of strap.
I claim as my invention In a cast off for suspenders, two coiiperto form rolls separated by an open space,
the other member comprising a plate having an elongated slot therein, the side edges of which are suitably spaced to snap over said rolls and the upper edge of which is adapted to bear on the upper edges of said rolls to carry the weight of the supported garment, the opposite edge of said slot being recessed to accommodate a tab strap, the above mentioned open space being sufficient to accommodate the width of said strap when the parts are in engagement.
