To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, COLUMBUS G. CAR- PENTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of WVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Scaffolding Attachments for Roofs of Buildings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in scalfolding attachments for the roofs 'of buildings.
The object of my invention is to provide a form of attachment, which can be readily secured to shingles, (whether the latter consist of wood, slate or other material) without danger of breaking or cracking the shingle and without indenting the same in a manner to cause decay.
In the following description, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of a portion of a roof, showing my improved attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the attachment, drawn through the clamping set screw. Fig. 3 is a detail side view of one of the shingle engaging members as it is prepared for use on slate roofs. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the clamping member, which cooperates with that shown in Fig. 3.
Like parts are identified by the same reference characters throughout the several views.
The attachment comprises a body 1, the under surface of which is notched so as to fit over the projecting ends of two or more shingles which have already been attached to the roof. A plate 2, preferably of metal, is secured to the inclined front margin of the member 1 and is provided with a forwardly projecting lower extremity 3, adapted to pass underneath the butt end of a shingle when the device is in position of use,
as shown in Fig. l. The outer or upper end i of the plate 2 is provided with projections 4, which may be conveniently formed by bending the corners of the plate to form cars, which project forwardly from the member 1 and are adapted to extend over the upper surface of a board or scantling, which may be supported upon the roof by two or more of these attachments.

within the notch 8 formed in its under sur- I face, I employ a clamping set screw 10, which extends downwardly through the member 1 and engages a nut 12 countersunk in the member 1 at the base of the notch, the countersunk recess conforming to the shape of the nut and preventing it from turning. The set screw 10 is adapted when turned downwardly to engage the upper surface of a clamping plate 14, which extends along the under surface of the member 1 within the notch 8, and is provided with an upturned end 16, which is entered in a suitable socket 18 formed in said member. The rear end portion of the member 1 is provided with a plate 20, which is adapted to extend underneath a shingle, the butt end of which is received in the notch 8, so that by turning the set screw 10 downwardly, this portion of the shingle may be clamped between the plate 14 and the plate 20. The plates 8 and 20 are preferably tapered, extending forwardly to a thin front edge, whereby they may be readily entered underneath the shingles. The plates 8, 14 and 20 have a substantial width, this being especially desirable as to the plates 14 and 20, whereby a shingle may be clamped between them with considerable force without injury to the shingle.
Where the device is to be used for slate roofs, the plate 20 is preferably sanded, milled, or otherwise roughened on its upper surface, as indicated at 22 in Fig. 3. The under surface of the clamping plate 14 is preferably surfaced with leather or other suitable flexible material, as indicated at 24, in Fig. .4.
It will be understood that the clamping plate 14 is movably connected with the member l, the upwardly projecting portions 16 being either loosely mounted in the socket 18 or this member may be formed of resilient material, whereby the clamping portion of the same may be pushed downwardly against the shingle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a device of the described class, the combination of a body member, a plate secured to one end thereof and having forwardly projecting end portions, the lower portion of said plate comprising a wedge shaped member adapted to pass underneath a roof shingle, a cooperating plate secured to the under surface of the body member near its rear end and extending forwardly in a position to pass underneath another roof shingle, a clamping member movably secured to the body member in a position to rest upon the upper surface of said last mentioned shingle, when the device is in position of use, and a clamping set screw connected with the body member and arranged to bear upon the upper surface of the clamping member.
2. In a device of the described class, the combination of a body member, a plate secured to one end thereof and having forwardly projecting end portions, the lower portion of said plate comprising a wedge shaped member adapted to pass underneath a roof shingle, a cooperating plate secured to the under surface of the body member near its rear end and extending forwardly in a position to pass underneath another roof shingle, a clamping member movably secured to the body member in a position to rest upon the upper surface of said last mentioned shingle, when the device is in position of use, and a clamping set screw connected with the body member and arranged to bear upon the upper surface of the clamping member, said body member being provided with a nut socketed therein and engaged by said clamping set screw, and said body member having notches in its under surface into which the shingles of the roof are adapted to fit.
