PROTECTGR FOR WINDOW-CLEANERS.

To all whom t may concern.'

Be it known that I, LUDWIG LoHR, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, but having declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Protectors for Window-Cleaners, and of which the following is a specication.

My improvements relate to means for safeguarding a person cleaning windows from falling from the same, and consists principally of means to provide a back support for the person while cleaning windows.

My 'improvements will be more fully understood taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which: j

Figure l is a side view of my protector, shown mounted on a window sill. Fig. 2 is a front view of the protector. Fig. 3 is a top view of the protector. Fig. 4 is a view showing extension bars to render the protector adaptable for different thicknesses of `walls. Fig. 5 is a cross section on line 5 5 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is a top view of the said eXtension bars.

Referring now to the drawings for a further description of my invention, A and A1 are the sides of the protector, and B is the back thereof. The sides A and Al are formed of the uprights a and f1.1 of wood, and these are connected together by means of eX- tension bars a2 and a3, these bars a2 and a3 have each a socket a4 encircling the uprights a and al and the latter are held in place by the pin a5 in such a way that the uprights may to a. certain degree swing about the pins c5, for a purpose to be described.

The extension bar a2 is provided with a slot a6 and a toothed rack a7 is formed at either edge of said slot, the extension bar a3 is provided with a bolt hole and slots to lighten the bar and has at either edge a flange as bearing 0n the teeth of the bar CL2. Near the bolt hole or in line thereof is provided one or more teeth adapted to engage between the teeth of the bar a2, so that when the two bars a2 and a3 are clamped together by means of a bolt a9, the two bars a2 and t3 form one rigid member. ets c4 of the respective bars a2 and a3 may be increased or decreased as required.

On the uprights a and al are adjustable stops c1 having lugs c2 and c3 to engage the inner and outer sill of the window, and as these sills may be of different level as shown in Fig. l these stops o1 may be set at any height on the uprights by means of the thumbscrews o4.

At the lower extremity of the uprights a is secured an adjustable back stop (Z1 comprisingv the threaded stock d2 and jam nut cl3. Just above the points where the bars as and a2 are joined to the uprights a and al respectively, are provided sliding stops s1, which normally rest against the projection s2 of the bars 0:2 and 1.3, by the force of the helical spring s3 mounted in the thimble formed on the respective bars c2 and a3 as shown in Fig. 4. These sliding stops s1 are provided to readily disengage the protector from the sill of the window, when it is desired to remove the protector from the window sill. For the purpose of removing the protector from a window these sliding stops are moved upward disengaging them from the respective projections s2, and the springs vs3 force the lower ends of the uprights a and al outward as will be readily understood from the drawings, Figs. 1 and 4. The sliding stops 81 are held in place on the uprights a and al by means of screws s4, and a slot S5 is formed in the back plate s6 which terminates in the handle sT of the stop s1.

To lthe uprights a of the sides A and A1 arel secured the brackets f1 by means of sockets f2 and these brackets f1 are provided lwith hinges f3, to which the rods o forming the back B are secured. The rods ZJ secured to the various hinges f3 form the back B,

and the sides A and A1 may be folded onto the same when the protector is not in use, as will be readily understood.

The construction and Inode of operation of t-he different parts constituting my improved protector for window cleaners, having been fully described, what I 'claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A protector for window cleaners, comprising-a back, two sides hinged thereto and composed of uprights connected by extension bars, adjustable stops on said uprights to suitthe different levels of the inner and outer window sills, and an adjustable back stop at the lower end of the outer uprights substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. A protector for Window cleaners coinprising a hack, two sides hinged thereto and composed of uprights and adjustable exten sion bars, the said bars pivoted to the said uprights, adjustable stops on said uprights to suit the levels of the inner and outer Window sills, sliding stops on said uprights i adapted to impinge on lugs formed on the l extension bars, helical springs mounted in thirnbles on the extension hairs and normally keeping the sliding stops in Contact with the said lugs, and adjustable back stops at the lower ends of the outer uprights, sub- 15 stantially as and for the purposes set forth.
