veltalvisn,nathanatlassian, Jn., yor MOUNT Locmaria*7 claro.
To eil whom 'it may concern;
Be it known that I, FRANK BERNARD lilas! America, and resident of 3439 Linwood avenue, Mount Lookout, in the county of Hamilton and State of Chio, Nos. 11104 to i112 Kenner street, Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sofa Beds; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference .being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
lily invention relates to sofa beds and it has `tor its object the improvement in construction of such'devices whereby they are rendered more efficientin action.
The novelty of my invention consists in the combination and subcombination of the parts as will be hereinafter set forth and specificallyv pointed out in the claim. in the draWings'Figure lis a transverse vertical section through the device when in its davenportform. Fig. 2f is a transverse vertical section when the davenport has been opened for a bed. Fig.A i3- is a transverse verticalq section when receptacle for clothing is in aposition :tor removing or placing bed clothing in same. Fig. -4- is an enlarged perspective view showing clip for engaging hinge. Fig. --5- is a front View of leg in recess. Fig. -6- is a. section on line 6, 6 of Fig. -5. Fig -7- is a section on line 7, 7 of Fig. '5. Fig. 8 is a detail view of one of the supporting pins.
A represents similar end standards (only one of which is shown) of my sofa bed or davenport, said end standards being preferably joined together by the top-back longitudinal members .A2-A2 andthe front rail A3. The frame Work for the bed consists of the angle iron pieces B, B2, B3 which are hinged together and attached tothe frame Work of the davenport C at C2. The end standards A have inclines D attached to them for guiding the rear end of angle iron B when changing` fronia davenport to a bed or vice versa. About half Way up this incline is a notch D2, in Which the catch B6 catches holding the different parts of the davenport in the position shown in Fig. PLQ7 making it more convenient to take from or place bed clothing in the receptacle E, this .receptacle post-oiiice address,l

can be made of most any kind of material but 1 prefer cloth. The receptacle E is provided with a door E2. Hinged to B3 is head rest F, which is opened out as shown in Fig. 2% when the davenport is usedv as a bed, and folded and 4locked inposition by the notch G, in the rail C3, when used as a davenport, as shown in Fig. -land Fig. -3., when davenport is partially open. This head rest F aids in holding the mat.- tress and bed clothing in position when folding up and opening out the bed portion. Attached to the inner side of the front rail A3 is a casing A4 for holding the hinge A5, by means of this casing the upholstered poi tion of the davenport and bed portion can be removed from the main frame. This per mits of different kinds of upholstered davenports being placed in the same frame. The legs H, which hold the davenport away from the lioor, fold back into the recess H2 when the davenport is folded back into the position shown in Fig. l. This recess H2 is provided with an incline H3, which forces the leg to slide out of the recess when the davenport is opened and a clip H4 aids in holding t-he leg in the recess. The pivot H5 on which the leg revolves is long enough so that the leg can have sutlicient play to permit it to slide in or out as it may be in the recess H2 or out of it. Attached to AT is a piece A", which hits against a stop A10, which is secured to the end standards A. The operation ot' my sofa bed is as follows; when the davenport is inv position shoivn in Fig. -l the rear portion is grasped by the operator and raised forward causing the davenport to revolve on the hinge A5, the

angle pieces Bg B2, B3 being pivoted to gether, adjust themselves to' any position. The rear end of angle iron B follows up the incline D, being guided by the catch B when the catch B6 reaches t-he notch D2, the door E2 is opened the clothing removed, the door closed and the revolution on the hinge A5, continued until the piece A9 hits the stop A10, then the :trame of the davenport C continues to revolve on the yhinge A8 until the frame C, is in position shown in Fig. 2, when the legs A, fall out holding the bed `in this position the rear end of B, having ad'- vanced the catch BG. until it rests on the top of the incline D. When this operation is reversed I have the davenport form as shown in Fig. -L
Having described my invention What l supporting pin upon the rear end of said claim is, folding frame adapted to rest in said notch,
The combination in a davenport sofa bed, all substantially as described. of a folding bed frame, attached to the dav? FRANK. BERNARD WERSEL, JR. 5 enpoit, an inclined guideway attached to Witnesses:
