Description
fned gitarist L. A. SUNDERLAND,
vOF MADISON, OHIO.
Letters Pate/nt No. 101,1 84, dated Apr-i1 12, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN MILK-CANS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and. making part of the same T o al? 'whom it 'may concern Be it known that I, L. A. SUNDERLAND, of Madison,- in the county of Lake and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete .descliption of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of' this specification, in which- Figure 1 is aperspective view.
Figure 2 is a section showing the bottom of the can.
`Like letters refer to like' parts. v
The nature 'of this improvement relates to the construction of a can for holding milk while being translported, and is so devised that there is nospringing of the bottom, whereby a can, as usually constructed, soon wears out and becomes useless, or requires frequent repairing;
In the drawings- A represents the body of a can, which mayabe made of tin of suitable weight, according to the size or capacity of the can.
B represents the bottom, which is made as follows:
A piece of sheet-iron, of' snihcient thickness to give the required strength, is pressed .in a concave form, and having a flange, b, turned at the edgei This bottoni is made of heavier plate than tin plate, and after being formed is trimmed.
A hoop or band, C, is also provided.
The bottom B being placed in the body A, and the hoop set on as represented, they are riveted together, making a very strong and unyielding can. The inside is then soldered, as also vis the outside.
The bottom B may he put in the other side up, but this Away is preferable, as it makes an arch capable of much resistance.
The bottom is held by the rivets, and does not depend upon the solder for that purpose. The solder only makes a water-tight joint` By this mode of construction a much cheaper can is made, and is fully as desirable, and more easily made than my patents formerly granted.
That I claim as my improvement, and desire to securey by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufl'tcture, a can provided with a convex-anged bottom, B, made in one piece, the flange b not extending below the bottom of the can, and having a hoop, G, on the outside,.the hoop, body, Aand-flanged bottom being riveted together, as set forth.
L. A. SUNDERLAND.
