FRANK T. MATTHEWS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
COAT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK T. Marrnnws, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore. in the State of Maryland, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Coats. of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has for its object to provide a convertible coat which may be worn either as a frock coat or as a swallow-tail coat, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front view of the improved coat with one side adjusted to frock-coat form and the other side adjusted to dress-coat form. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section on line 22, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sect-ion on line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. ais an inside view of the right half of the coat, partly broken away, with the front portion of the skirt folded in and its outer position denoted by a dash and dot line. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section on line Fig. 1, and Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail section on line 66, Fig. 1.
The improved coat 12 comprises, in the body thereof, finished low-turned lapels 13 which, when the coat is to be used as a dresscoat, are covered on their outer sides with facings 14: of silk or other suitable material and which are permanently attached at their inner edges to the lining 15 of the body portion of the coat, said facings, when the coat is to be worn as a frockcoat or day coat, being turned in under the said lining. The front edges of the lining 15 are detachably secured to the inside of the coat, back from the folded edges of the lapels, so as to be out of the way and so as to provide pockets for the reception of the facings 1st when the latter are not in use. This detachable attachment of the front edges bfthe lining to the body of the coat will preferably be effected by a vertical series of separable ball-and-socket or snap fasteners 15, and the facings when turned outward over the lapels are detachably secured in place by balland-socket or other separable fastenings 16 with which the free edges of said facings and under sides of the edges of the lapels are provided.
The front side parts 17 of the skirt 18 of the horizontally divided front of the coat are detachably secured at their tops to the Patented Feb. 20, 1912.
Serial No. 633,837.
body portion of the coat, to form a frock coat, such detachable attachment of these parts being preferably effected by a horizontal series of separable ball-and-socketfasteners 19 the ball portions of which, on each side of the coat, are mounted on an extension or part 20 on the part 17 and which extension is overlapped by the upper partof the front of the coat and to the inner side of the lower edge of which the socket members of the fasteners are attached. The lower edges of the body part of the coat and of the lining thereof, above the infolding or detaclr able parts 17 of the skirt, are provided with separable fasteners 19* by which the edges of the body part of the coat and the lining may be detachably secured together, both when the parts 17 are turned in and when they are not.
V7 hen the coat is to be converted into a swallow-tail dress coat the front skirt por ticns 17 are detached at their tops from the body part of the coat and are turned inward beneath the lining portions 21 which are permanently attached to the skirt portions of the coat at their back and bottom edges, but are detachably attached to the skirt portions at their front edges, thus forming pockets for the reception of "the inturned skirt portions. This detachable attachment of the front edges of the lining portions of the skirt parts is preferably ef fected by means of a vertical series of hooks 22 with which. said front edges are provided, and which hooks may be engaged with eyes or loops 23 on the insides of the skirt portions. When the front parts 17 of the skirt 7 are folded back into the pockets alforded by the lining portions 21 the hooks are e11- gaged with invisible thread loops 24 with which the outer surfaces of the skirt are provided. The pockets afforded by the linings of the skirts will be inside of the usual skirt pockets so as not to interfere therewith, so that the novel construction will afford all of the conveniences, by way of pockets, aiforded by coats of ordinary construction. When the skirt portions 17 are folded back into their pockets, as more clearly shown in Fig. 4, they may be secured in place by snap fastenings 25 with which said skirt portions and the outer cloth of the coat are preferably provided.
The top portions of the facings 14 are preferably provided with strips 26 to connectsaid facings with the collar of the coat by means of snap fastenings 27, when the said facings are extended over the lapels 13 From the foregoing itwill be apparent that the invention provides a convertible coat which. while suitable for day wear as a frock coat, may be readily transformed. into a swallow-tail, evening or dress coat.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The herein described convertible coat the body portion of which comprises lowtnrned. front lapels and which body portion is provided, adjacent to said lapels, with lining parts haring free front edges. to form pockets, but which are provided with means whereby they may be dctachably attached to the body of the coat. and facings permanently attached to said lining parts and adapted to be received in said pockets or to be folded ontward over said lapels, combined with means for detachably attaching the outer of said facings to the under sides of the said lapels.
The herein described convertible coat the body portion of which comprises lowtnrned front lapels and which body portion. is provided, tuljacentto said lapels. with lining parts having free front edges, to form pockets, but which are provided with means whereby the r may be dctachably attached to the body of the coat, and facings permanently attached to said lining parts and adapted to be received in said pockets or to be folded out *ard over said lapels, conibined with means for detachably attaching the outer edges of said facings to the under sides of the said lapels, said means comprising separable fastenings the .ineinbers of which are attached to the under sides of said lapels and to the free edges of said facings.
3. The herein described convertible coat having divided fronts providing skirt portions the front parts of which are adapted to be turned inward, the rear parts of the skirt portions of the coat being provided with linings having free front edges to form pockets into which the front parts of the skirt may be folded when the coat is to be converted into a dress coat. the said front edges of said linings being provided with hooks. and the face sides of the body of the skirt being provided with loops with which said books may be engaged. to detachably attach the front edges of said linings to the shirt, and thereby retain the infolded portions of the skirt in said pockets.
4-. The herein described convertible coat having divided fronts providing skirt portions the front parts of which are adapted to be turned inward, the rear parts of the skirt ortions of the coat being provided with linings having free front edges to form pockets into which the front parts of the skirt may be folded when the coat is to be converted into a dress coat, the said front edges of said linings being provided with hooks, and the face sides of the body of the skirt being provided with loops with which said hooks may be engaged, to detachably attach the front edges of said linings to the skirt. and thereby retain the infolded portions of the shirt in said pockets. the adjacent edges of the body part of the coat and the ii'ifolding front part of the skirt having overlapping parts provided with separable fasteners.
In, testimony whereof I atlix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
