UNETED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES H. BURT, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TQ COMBO SHIRT-COAT CQMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
COMBINATION GARMENT.
SPECIFICATION formng part of Let/0ers Patent No. 712,763, dated November 4, 1902. Application fi1ed January 13,1902. Serial No. 39,393. (No model.i
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES II. BURT, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Springfield, in the connty of Hampde and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and nse fnl Garment, the same being animprovement of an invention set forth in my application for United States Letters Patent filed September 4:, 1900, Serial No. 28,988, and allowed November 16, 1901, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in garments, in which certain fragmentary portions or parts are so eombined and nnited With a coat as to prodnee a complete article of wearingapparel, as hereinafter fully described, and especially pointed out in the olaims; and the object of my invention is to' produce a simple, light, and inexpensive garment particularly nsefnl for service in bot weather, whioh has the appearance of a coat, vest, and shirt, but which is free from the disoomfort attending the wearing of so many separate and complete garments during the heated season. This improvement serves a double pnrpose in providing for the oomfort of the wearer and in giving hini the appearanoe of being fully dressed, two considerations that appeal to many With almost eqnal force.
A fnrther improvement consists of a peoul Fiure 1 is a frohtviewof m 7 arment ortions ofthe coat-and-vest member being 91evated to more clearly diselose the construction; Fig. 2, a seetionai view of said garment, showing the constructions thereof, inelnding my improved neekband; Fig. 3, a front view of the abdominal-shirt member detaohed, and Fig. 4: a front view of the vest and ohest-shirt members detached.
. Similarletters referto similarpartsthroughout the several views.
The vest, abdominal-shirt, and chest-Shirt portions will be referd 170 .as members, the singnlar being sed for each division, althongh, as in the case of the two former, each division consists of two parts, becanse the parts are ni1ited when on the wearer by suitable fasteningmeans and practieally constitute one member, or said parts might be perman ently fastened together, of course, and detaehably conneeted at one side with the coat. It is believed, however, that this last arrangement Wonid not prove to be a satisfactory one for practical pnrposes.
A eoat ais employed ofany snitable construction so far as its general h1ake-up is concerned, and it has attached thereto the vest memberb, the abdominal-shirtmemberc, and the chest-shirt member 61. The front edges of the coata are not designed to be bronght together, but. are normally separated for a distance correspondinp: snbstantially With that whioh separates the front edges of an ordinary ooat when loft unbnttoned.
The vest member b preferably comprises ,two comparatively narrow strips (best shown in Fig. 4) stitohed or otherwise attaohed at the outer edges to the inside of the breast of the eoat a and buttoned or otherwise nnited at the center.
The abdominal-shrt member c preferably comprises two depending fiaps stitched or otherwise fastened at their upper edges t0 theinside of the vest member 23 and of the coat 0.. When the member c s made as just described, the overlapping edges of the parts are bnttoned together np and down the cen ter or nnited in some similar manner. This flap is designed to be tncked into the front of the tronsers when the garment is worn and not only serves to hold the front part of the garment in place, but aiso t0 conceal the and this member, With said fiap (1', is sewed or otherwise fastened to the inside of the vest; member 1) and the coat a, the stitches, if thread is nsed, being taken along the outer edges of sai l member and the lower edge of the flan. 'lhe member (I is of proper size r0 fili LheV-shaped spaee above the vest member I) and is preferably open in front and provided with lmbtonholes and buttons or other snitable means for fastening the nverlapping edges togebher over the chest. The object 0f dividing Lhe garment; members over the chest, breast, and abdomen and providing closing means for the same instead of rendering them detaehahle at one sde from the coat; is to inorease lhe facility with which the garment can be put on and taken off, also to enhance the hang and fit of the same.
I prefer to make the neckbandfdonble at the back, as shown in Fig. 2, leaving a pocket g between the innerthickness et cloth f and the outer thicknessf, in which latter a buttonhole is formed forthe reeeption of the back collar-stnd. This collar-stud is shown at h and is coneealed with the lower part of the collar i ny the collar a of the Goal: a, which extends np aronnd the bac]; of the neokbandf. The collar a may 'be of any desired pattern.
I do not wish to be eonfined to any particnlar shape 01' size of coab and associated members, as changes in these particnlars and departnres in miner details of construction other than those hereinbefore alluded t0 may be made wibhout vioiating the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The eombination, in agarment, of acoat, and a chesb-shirt member provided with a neekband of double t.hickness of material at the back s0 arranged as to form a holding means and a pockeb for t.he back collar-stud,be- 10W the upper edges of said neckband and the coat-collar, Lhe ehest-shirt member and neckband being secnrely attached to the inside of the coat, snbstantiaily as set forth.
2. The combination, in a garment, of a coa, a vest member having its outer edges attached to the inside of said coat, and a chestshirt member provided With a neckband of double thiokness of material s0 arranged as to form a holding means and a pocket for the baek collar-sbnd, below the upper edges of said neekband and thecoat-collar, and having a flap depending from the back thereof, said shirt member and flan being attached to the inside of said vesb member and coar, suhstantially as set; forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this speeification in the presenee of two subscribing witnesses.
