MBIA PLANUURAPH CCMWASHINUTON n c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCESCO FERRARA, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ADJUSTABLE WINDOW -SI-IADE-ROLL HOLDERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Francesco FERRARA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suifolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Window-Shade-Roll Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in adjustable window shade roll holders of that class in which the shade roll is mounted in holders which are suspended by adjustably arranged cords secured thereto so that the roll may be raised or lowered in order that the shade may be adjusted to cover any part or the whole of the window.
The object of this invention is to provide a pair of holders which shall be simple and attractive in appearance and which may be easily and conveniently attached to and detached from the ends of the roll as well as to the cords from which the holders are suspended.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of a window and window shade and roll, the shade roll being mounted in a pair of holders embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail elevation of the left hand holder. Fig. 3 is an elevation viewed from the left hand side of Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a sectional view taken on line 44. of Fig. 2, looking toward the right. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail front elevation of the right hand holder. Fig. 6 is a section taken on line 66 of Fig. 5 looking toward the left.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 10 is a spring-actuated shade roll having a usual spindle 11 provided with a flattened end 12 projecting from the left hand end of said roll, while said roll is provided at its right hand end with a pin 13 having thereon an annular flange 14 separated from the end of the roll by a space.
15 is a holder in which the pin 13 is journaled, said holder consisting of a plate bent into U-shape form and having two walls 16 and 17, the wall 17 being provided with Specification of Letters Patent.

a hole 18 in which the pin 13 .is journaled and substantially fits.
The wall 16 is provided with a slot 19, the lower part of which is smaller than the flange 14 and the upper part of which is larger than said flange so that normally the holder is prevented from becoming detached from the pin 13, but if it be desired to detach the same therefrom, the wall 17 is sprung outwardly thus disengaging the end of the pin 13 from the hole 18 and said pin is lifted until the flange 14 registers with the upper part of the slot 19 and may then be withdrawn therethrough.
The holder 15 is provided with two horizontally extending portions 20 and 21 provided, respectively, with holes 22 and 23 in which is secured a cord 24 from which the holder is suspended. The left hand end of the shade roll is supported in a holder 25 comprising in its construction two plates 26 and 27, constituting guides for the edge of the shade and provided, respectively, with flanges 28 and 29 located on opposite sides, respectively, of the flattened portion 12 of the spindle 11, said flanges being provided with recesses 30 and 31 adapted to receive said flatten-ed portion. The flanges 28 and 29 are clamped against the flattened portion 12 by means of two bolts 32 and 33 having nuts 34 and 35, respectively, said nuts being held against rotation by their engagement with the vertical walls of the plate 26 and another plate 36 arranged parallel thereto. The latter plate is provided with a projection 37 having a notch or recess 38 in which the flanges 28 and 29 are located, said flanges being also notched at 39 to interlock with the projection 37 so that the plates 26 and 27 are prevented from moving horizontally in any direction with relation to the plate 36. The plates 27 and 36 are provided, respectively, with horizontal projections 40 and 41 provided, respectively, with holes 42 and 43 in which is located a cord 44 by which the holder is suspended. The cord 44 extends vertically to and through an eye 45 secured to the window casing and thence horizontally through a second eye 46 through which the cord 44 also extends, both of said cords thence eX- tending downwardly along the side of the window casing and being secured to a suitable fastening device 47 The shade roll may be raised or lowered,
as desired, to adjust the shade to cover any part or the whole of the window. The holder 15 may be easily and quickly detached from the shade roll, as hereinbefore described, and the holder 25 may be detached from the roll by simply loosening the bolts 32 and 33 very slightly from between the flanges 28 and 29.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is: j
1. In combination, a spring-actuated shade roll having a spindle provided wit-h a flattened portion projecting from one end thereof, a holder in which the other end of said roll is rotatably supported, and a second holder in which said flat-tened portion is held, said second holder. comprising two members disposed on opposite sides of said flattened portion, and provided with recesses forming an elongated chamber in which said flattened portion is located, and two parallel screws located on opposite sides of said flattened portion and adapted to hold said members in cooperative relation therewith.
2. In combination, a spring-actuated shade roll having a spindle provided with a flattened portion projecting from one end thereof, a holder in which the other end of said roll is rotatably supported, and a second holder in which said flattened portion is held, said second holder comprising a pair of plates having flanges disposed on opposite sides, respectively, of said flattened portion, and provided with recesses in which the same is located, and a third plate having a projection provided wit-h a recess in which said flanges are located, the last-mentioned plate being located in a plane substantially parallel to the first-mentioned pair of plates.
3. In combination, a springactuated shade roll having a spindle provided with a flattened portion projecting from one end thereof, a holder in which the other end of said roll is rotatably supported, and a second holder in which said flattened portion is held, said second holder comprising a pair of plates having flanges disposed on opposite sides, respectively, of said flattened portion and provided with recesses in which the same is located, and a third plate having a projection provided with a recess in which said flanges are located, said flanges being provided with recesses in which said projection is located.
4. In combination, a spring-actuated shade roll having a spindle provided with a flattened portion projecting from one end thereof, a holder in which the other end of said roll is rotatably supported, and a second holder in which said flattened portion is held, said second holder comprising a pair of plates having flanges disposed on opposite sides, respectively, of said flat-tened portion and provided with recesses in which the same is located, and a third plate secured to the other two and arranged substantially parallel thereto; and a cord secured to said third plate and to one of said pair of plates from which cord said second holder is suspended.
5. I11 combination, a spring-actuated shade roll having a spindle provided with a flattened portion projecting from one end thereof, a holder in which the other end of said roll is rotatably supported, and a second holder in which said flattened portion is held, said second holder comprising a pair of plates having flanges disposed on opposite sides respectively of said flattened portion, and provided with recesses in which said flattened portion is located, a third plate secured to said pair of plates in a plane substantially parallel thereto, two screws passing through said flanges on op posite sides respectively of said flattened portion, and two nuts bearing against one of said flanges having screw-threaded engagement with said screws, respectively, and located in the space between said third plate and one of the plates of said pain In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
