Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH F. PERLIK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Levels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a level, and the objects of my invent-ion are to provide an instrument of the above type that can be advantageously used by surveyors and artisans for determining angles, levels and-points, and to provide an instrument of precision consisting of comparatively few parts that are durable, simple in construction and easy to assemble.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawings, Where in like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the instrument. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the instrument. Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a pointer or indicator, partly broken away andpartly in section. The instrument comprises an oblong body 1 rectangular in cross section and having the side walls provided with longitudinal V shaped grooves 2, the bottom with a longitudinal inverted V shaped groove 3 and the ends with transverse V shaped grooves 4.
The body is provided with transverse openings 5 and the bottom thereof with vertical opening 6, thereby forming a skeleton frame that might be said to consist of three X shaped heads connected by longitudinal bottom rails and a longitudinal top plate.
Mounted upon the body 1 intermediate the ends thereofis the enlargement 7 of a ring or annulus 8 and the side walls of this ring are suitably graduated, as at 9. It is preferable to make the ring of a less width than the body and to secure said ring to the body by screws 10 or other fastening means.
The sides of the body 1, adjacent to the enlargement 7 are recessed, as at 11 for the lower ends of uprights 12, said uprights being oppositely disposed with the lower ends thereof retained in the recesses 11 by screws 13 or other fastening means. The upper ends of the uprights are bent inwardly and then upwardly and provided with openings 14. Detachably mounted in the openings 14 is a bolt or spindle 15 retained therein by an ordinary nut 16 and a winged thumb nut 17. The bolt or spindle 15 is concentric relatively to the ring or annulus 8 and revolubly mounted upon said spindle is the hub 18 of an indicator or pointer. The hub 18 has the ends thereof provided with oppositely disposed longitudinally alining arms 19 and 20, the former supporting a segment shaped weight 21 and the latter are connected adjacent to the upper ends by a web 20 The arms 19 and 20 gradually taper from the hub 18 to the upper ends and these upper ends are adapted to extend in front of the sides of the ring or annulus 8 to designate the graduations upon either side of the ring or annulus.
From the foregoing it Will be observed that the instrument can be used as a level for determining when a surface is level or at an inclination and that through the medium of the various grooves in the body of the instrument said instrument can be firmly held upon sharp edges or corners to determine the plane of a horizontal structure or the vertical plane of a vertical structure.
