Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 28; 1911.
Application led November 2, 1910. Serial No.v 590,318.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, DANIEL F. LAWRENCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brandon, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Levels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings.
This invention relates to an improved plumb or level such as is used by carpenters and other mechanics, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which is simple, efficient in construction and may be manufactured and sold at a very low cost.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists of the novel features ment of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated Iin the accompanying drawings, in whichl Figure l is a slde elevation of a level constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the drawing 5 designates a block or base which is preferably of wood. One face of this block is provided ,with a circular recess 6 to receive a similarly shaped graduated plate 7. This plate has a circle of degrees marked thereon and an outer circle of minutes. A stud 8 is centrally` secured to the plate 7 and has pivotally mounted thereon a dial arm 9. One end of this arm is formed with an arrow head which is disposed over the graduations of the dial plate and thel other end thereof on the opposite side of the pivot pin is circularly enlarged as indicated at 9 to effect an unequal distribution of the weight of said arm on opposite sides of the 1n. Thus when the block is vertically' ositioned upon the surface to be leveled, te arrow is al-` ways vertically disposed and positioned over the 90 mark. Y
The dial plate 7 is adapted to be securely held in position in the recess of the block by means of an annulus 10. This annulus is recessed to receive the glass cover 10 and is secured in place by means of a plate 11 which is arranged upon the same. The plate 11 is formed at opposite sides with the laterally extending arms l2 which are countersunk in the surface of the block as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Suitable fastening screws 13 are threaded through the plate and through the annulus 10 and into the body vof the block and may be constructed at a low cost. The
level is adapted to be used in the'manner of the common carpenters level, and when arranged upon the surface to be leveled will accurately indicate the degree of inclination of said surface.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is In a device of the character described, the combination with a base block havin a circular recess in one surface thereof, o a dial plate arranged in said circular recess and having .degrees and minutes marked thereon, a stud centrally secured to the dial plate, an indicating arm pivoted on said stud, said arm being enlarged and of greater weight on one side of the pivot stud than on the other, said lighter end of the arm being disposed over the graduations on the dial plate, an annulus having a recess in one face and arranged in the recess of said block and engaging upon the outer edge of the dial plate, a glass cover seated 1n the recess of said annulus, a plate disposed upon said annulus having laterally extending arms 1ntegrally formed therewith countersunk in the .surface of the block, and securing screws extending'thrcugh said plate and the arms thereof and through said annulus and into the block to iminovably secure the dial plate in the recess of said block.
In testimon whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature intlie presence of two witnesses.
' DANIEL F. LAWRENCE.
