HENRY TATUM, OF MIAKKA, FLORIDA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILBUR HODGES, OF MIAKKA, FLORIDA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J'une 12, 1906.
Application filed June 13, 1905. Serial No. 265,116.
['0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY TATUM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Miakka, in the county of Manatee and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Bevel and Compasses, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to compound tools designed especially for use in building construction, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character in which the various parts of the building may be readily and accurately leveled or plumbed, one whereby the walls may be surveyed and measured, and one in which the line of direction of a wall may be accurately obtained.
With these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of partsmore fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device. Fig. 4 is a cross-section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body'of the tool, composed of wood or other suitable material and preferably of the general contour herein shown, said body being provided in one of its side faces with a lateral socket or chamber 2, having a pivoted cover or closure 3 and adapted to receive and house a plumb-line 4 when the latter is not in use, there being also formed laterally through the body an opening or seat 5, designed to receive a spring-actuated drum or spool 6, having wound thereon a tape measure 7, equipped at its free end with a finger-piece or ring 8 and adapted to be drawn outward through a suitable opening in the body, which is recessed at 8 to accommodate the ring when the line is .in normally-wound condition.
Countersunk in the normally upper edge of the body 1 is a compass 9 and a spirit-tube 10, the latter serving to find horizontal levels, there being provided in one side face of the tube a second spirit-tube 11, disposed at an angle of forty-five degrees relative to the tube 10 and adapted for truing the rafters of buildings relative to the floor-surface. The normally upper edge of the body has formed therein a socket or chamber 12, provided with a pivoted lid or cover 13 and adapted to normally receive a telescope 14, pivoted to an arm 15, which in turn is pivoted at 16 to the body and within the compartment, it being apparent that the telescope may when desired be moved to the full-line position illustrated in Fig. 1 for use.
Formed upon one side face of the body and adjacent one of its longitudinal edges is a ruler 17, graduated in inches and fractions thereof and designed to perform its usual functions.
In practice the level of a wall or floor may be obtained through the medium of the spirit-tube 10, which latter also serves in conjunction with the tube 11 for ascertaining the proper pitch of rafters or other inclined beams relatively to the horizontal. The line of direction of the wall may be ascertained by means of the compass 9, the telescope 14 being utilized for surveying the ground and the tape-measure 7 for obtaining the proper measurements, all as will be readily understood.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce a simple inexpensive device. which will admirably perform its functions to the attainment of the ends in view, it being understood that minor changes in the details herein set forth may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A tool of the type described comprising a body having a recess formed in one face thereof, an arm pivoted to fold into said recess, a telescope pivoted to and movable with said arm, and a cover movably connected with the body and adapted for normally closing the recess to house the telescope and arm therein.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY TATUM.
