Be it known that I, .HENRY J. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Niles, in the county of Trumbull and State ofOhio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Rolling-i of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the subject of .metal rolling, and particularly to an i1nproved delivery guide for the material to be rolledf The object of the invention is to provide a simple and practical construction of rolling mill guide embodying means that insure the correct alining of the metal bar with the passes of the rolls, and also to prevent the spreading or opening of the end of the bar to an extent that would interfere with the entrance thereoi between the rolls. In this connection, it is well understood by those familiar with the art that a dilliculty commonl y experienced in rolling mill operations, and even with the use of ing mill guides, that the heated bar opens or spreats at the end the instant it is released from the pres ure of the rolls, and for that reason it is impossible to roll iron on what is usually known as a continuous mill, wherein a series of sets of rolls are set up in alinement, each succeeding providing tor further reduction of the bar. hen the bar opens or spreads on the end upon leaving the rolls, the same is liable to yield to its tendency to straddle one of the rolls on the next set rather than to enter the passes of such rolls, and for that reason it is usually necessary to pass the bar back and forth through different passes in the same set of rolls. This, of course, is not the case with steel, which does not open or spread at the end in the same manner as an iron bar when being rolled.
Therefore, one of the distinctive objects .of the present invention is to provide a guide the several elements of which are so arr nged, and capable of such adjustment that the guides proper may be held close to the bite of the rolls, thus preventing the opening or spreading of the front end of the bar, as it emerges from the rolls. Also, the improved guide is of such a construction as to admit of a close adjustment for the guide members proper, while'at the same time pro viding all the rigidity that is necessary for unyieldingly holding the guide members backed up in their guiding position.

some types of rollwhich will more readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in-the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
One of the practical embodiments of the invention is suggested in the accompanying drawings, in which z- Figure l is a front elevation of a rolling mill guide constructed in accordance with the present invention and shown applied to the housings for a set of rolls. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view showing guide holder or retainer and the guide box which is intended to be loosely seated. there in, these elements being shown in separated relation.

In carrying out the invention, no change or alteration is required in the usual parts of a rolling mill, so for illustrative purposes there shown in the drawings one set or pair of rolls l-l mounted in the ordinary manner in the usual roll housings 2 of the conventional construction to prodde for the removable mounting of the rolls therein.
According to the present invention, the opposite roll housings 2 are provided upon their inner sides back of the discharging or out-going side of the rolls with longitudinally arranged holding grooves 3 formed in any suitable manner and closed at the upper and lower ends as at at and 4* and also at the outer and inner sides thereof as at 5 and 6 respectively, but a feature of the invention is to provide the inner wall portion 6 of each holding groove 3 with a lateral clearance opening 7 which permits the insertion and removal of the supporting bars 8 in a manner to be presently referred to.
Aside from the holding grooves 3, the rolling mill guide, as an entirety, essentially comprises a pair of the supporting bars 8 held in spaced relation and lying in horizontal parallel planes, and each of said supporting bars constitutes the supporting member for a guide holder or retainer 9. This guide holder or retainer is in yoke form, that is -to say, consists of a U-shaped piece 01' block having the opposite parallel side legs 10 and the outer end piece 11 con necting the outer ends of the side legs, thus the U shaped providing an element constructed with What may he termed an open guide seat which loosely and detaehably receives therein the guide member proper 12.
The guide member 12 consists oi a blocl: that regh rs in the socket or seat of the guide holder 9, and also rests against the supporting bar 8 carrying the latter. Furthermoe, the guide block or member 12 is provided on its guiding lace with a channel or groove 13 that corresponds in cross sectional form to the shape oi the roll parses, and serves to receive the front end of the bar inuncdiately as it leaves the rolls, and to [it the same with suliicient closeness to prevent the amending thereof, which has been previously reicrred to.

it will ot course be nude 'ood that the guide holders and guide blocks carried by the two supporting bars 8 are arranged in inverted and superposed relation, as shown in the drawings, so that the two guide blocks run a complete tubular guide through which the metal bar is guided. The supporting bars 8 are provided at their extremities with dowel elements or tongues 18 that are inserted laterally through the clearance openings 7, and carried out of the same, when the bars are resrmclivcly placed iulo and taken out of, their holding groove. And the bars are rigidly held in their spaced armrt position and also rigidly wedged in their holding grooves by the simple expedient of choclc ing struts 19, wedged into the holding grooves respectively above and below the uppermmt bar 8 at the ends thereof. It the adjustment o the parts required it, similar struts could also he placed below the lowermost supporting bar 8.

1. in a rolling mill guide, the rill housing, a pair of supporting bars mounted betaveen the housing, a. guide holder mounted on each supporting bar, and a guide member loosely and dctachably sealed in the holder.
2. In a rolling mill guide, the roll housings, a pair of supporting bars mounted helwcen the housings, a guide holder mounted on each supporting bar, and a guide mem ber loosely and detachably seated Within the holder and also seated, on the supporting bar, the holders and guide members on the opposite bars being arranged in inverted relation.
3. in a rolling mill guide, the roll housings, a pair of supporting bars mounted hetn'ccn the housings, a guide holder mounted on each supporting bar and adjustable transversely of the latter toward and from the rolls, and a separate guide member loosely and detachably seated in each holder. 4:. In a rolling mill guide, the roll l1ousl'ings, a pair of supporting bars mounted between the housings, a U-shaped guideholder mounted. on each supporting bar and having its open end next to the mill rolls, and a separate guide member loosely seated in the guide holder and projecting through and beyond the open end thereof.
