This invention relates to a rolling mill guide, and more particularly to a quick releasing guide for'rod mills.
In the operation of rod mills, it frequently happens that the rod or her being rolled becomes kinked or deformed in such a way that it will not pass the guide but will become wedged therein in such a way as to obstruct the guide. This makes it necessary to disassemble or adjust the guide to permitthe deformed portion to pass, after which the guide is restored to its normal position until another obstruction occurs.
An object of the present invention is to provide a guide which may be quickly and easily adjusted or manipulated to release the metal being process-ed. r
In general terms, the invention comprises a pair of complementary guide plates forming a guide passage for a rod, the outer cross} section of the guide plates being upwardly tapered to permit them to fit Within an upwardly tapered recess in the guide box frame.
The guide plates are normally held in their operative position by a wedge inserted beneath their lower edges, and when it is desired to release the guide plates the wedge is moved rearwardly, allowing the plates to drop by gravity. The taper of the aperture in which they are held then allows them to separate and release the rod. 7
The invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a guide embodying the invention; V

The guide illustrated in the drawing comprises a frame member 8 having a down wardly extending flange 10 designed to engage a cross bar12'secured to the frame of the rolling mill, the frame member 8 being adjustable by means of a bolt 14 seated in a vertical slot formed in the flange 10. Although the invention has been described in connection with a guide designed for use at the entrance side of the rolls, it will be apparent that it may also be used at the delivery side of the rolls. Instead of the bolt I '32, a cam or other. quick-releasingmeans may be used to withdraw the wedge and release the guide plates. Other modifications in the apparatus described may be made within the scope of the following claims.

A rolling mill guide comprising a frame provided with an elongated aperture having upwardly tapering walls, separable cooperat ing guide membershaving their outer walls aperture, an incl inedsurface positioned below the guide plates and spaced therefrom, a wedge member interposed between the guide plates and said surface to retain the guide plates'in operative positiomand means for similarly tapering and fitting within said I moving the wedge member longitudinally of theguide plates to release them and to cause the wedge member to engage them and move them to an inoperative position.
3. A rolling mill guide comprising a pair of'lguide members cooperating to form a guide channel and mounted to sep-arate'laterally when permitted to move downwardly,
an inclined surface positioned below-the guide members and spaced therefrom, a wedge member mounted to travel on said inclined surface and normally bearing upwardly against the guide -menibers for retaining guide channel, a tapered member for vertically supporting the guide members in closed position and means for moving the tapered member longitudinally of the guide members to permit them to move downwardly by the action of gravity to an open position, said guide plates and tapered member'having cooperating surfaces engageable to move the
