Description

JOHN A. HALL, 0F NEWBURG, CANADA.
Letters Patent No. 101,727, dated Apr/il 12, 1870.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
The Schedu1e referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all who-m it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. HALL, of N ewburg, in the county of Lenox and Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented an Improved Washing-Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which-f- Figure l represents a sectional elevation of my im proved washing-machine; and
Figure 2, a plan view of the bottom of the tub.
The object of my invention is to produce a washingmachine which shall operate upon the clothes by pressnre, without friction, and hence without wearing or injuring them, as in other machines of this class.
In carrying out my invention, I construct a tlb, A, of the usual circular form, with a bottom, B, w ich is Aprovided with a series of concentric grooves, as represented in iig. 2.
Gis a press-block, having an oval or rounded face, n, or one describing the arc of a circle when taken in cross-section through any part. It is groovcd in the same manner as the bottom of the tub, beveled around its sides from the face inward, and provided with a vertical handle, I).
To operate the device, the block C is first removed and the clothes to be washed placed in the tub, together with a suitable quantity of hot water. The block is then replaced and the handle D rotated about its vertical axis, which has the effect to cause the block to always press upon the clothes on that side to which the handle is inclined.
I thus provide a simple, compact, and eiicient machine at minimum cost.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-.
The improved washing-machine consist-ing of the press-block C, having the handle I) and an oval or rounded face, a, provided with concentric grooves, and the tub A, with its bottom B provided with similar grooves, as shown and described.
JOHN A. HALL.
