'WILLIAM J". WALSH, OF HATILTON. ONTARIG, 'CANLIMMj OPEN-BOOK REST.
Application ledAugust 28, 1911.
To @ZZ lwhom i' t m n.1/ concern Be it known that I. tumult J. llxLsi-r. a subjectl of the King of' Great Britain. and resident of Hamilton. in the county of /Ventworth and Province of Ontario. Canada. have invented new and useful Iniprovements in Open-Book Rests. of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in open book rests. in which a rest. or table. having an open book thereon. is connected or attached. to a wall. and adapted to adjustment Vfrom a readable to a non-readable position'or vertical position.
The objects of my invention are first. to bring the open book on its rest. or table. from a vertical and, nou-readable position. downwardly to a readable position: second. to provide means whereby the open book together with its horizontal rest. may be tilted sidewise. at an angle. to receive increased lie-ht. thereby making the same suitable tov desired location; third. to afford facilities for easily raising the open book and rest, from a readable position. to` a non-readable position; and fourth. to provide means on the rest to receive and to retain the open 1oook.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure l is a sectional elevation of the wall bracketand casing therein. showing the open book on its table or'rest. adjusted to a readable position. and the book and table shown in broken lines. adjusted to a vertical or non-readable position. Fig. 2 is a plan ofthe wall bracket. a portion of which is broken away to show thel operating and controlling` mechanism of the rest. connected therewith. Fig. 2% is an enlarged cross section of the book rest arm. together with the book and rest in horizontal position. the broken lines indicatingl how the rest may be tilted in either direction.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views. f
In the drawing A is-a wall plate. or bracket. having` jaws B. projecting therefrom. and rigidly secured to a wall Dais a rest arm. havin;v a transverse casing L'at one end thereof. fitting between the jaivs B. and a bolt E. provided with suit-- able nuts F extending through the jaws and the casing. is adapted to tighten the jaws thereto. thereby binding together more or Specification of Letters Patent.

less the casing` with the restarm D. The bolt acts as a pivot for the rest arm to swing on. On the bolt. and ybetween the end flanges (3. ot the casing. a spiral spring S. one end 3 of the spring pres., s againstithe upper projecting partl of the wall bracket. and the opposite end l of the spring presses against the projecting lip 5. of the casing. The tension of the spring is so adjusted that when the book J is in readable position. the lip 5 stops iu contact with the bracket. and together. with the spring. supports the arm. the table H. and the book J.
8. is a spring sleeve. of' resilient nature ,having a flange 9. extending on one side thereotl in double form which is secured to the underside of the table. The sleeve fits snugly to. and is adapted to tilt in either direction on the arm. and to retain the table to the arm. The flange 9 extends in single form beyond the opposite side 'of the sleeve and is indicated-by l2. the flange. or plate l2 forms a part of the flange 9 and contacts with the underside of the table and rests on the arm D. and together with the sleeve S. holds the table horizontally7 on the a-rm.
The tilted positions of the table are teinporary. and will not remain so tilted. for immediately the hand is removed from the manipulation of the table. the same will resumev normal position. by the inherent resiliency of the sleeve S.
The table is specially applicable to receive telephone. directory and other books of reference.
lvl. are strips beveled on their inner edges and are secured on the top of' the table. and are adapted to hug the binding part of the open book. and to allow the leaves of the book to be freely turned over. and also to allow the book to be slid endwise therefrom. 'tor removing or replacing purposes.
15. are slotted holes. 'lo are washers. and 1T are screws to secure the strips to the table and allow adjustment of one said strip.
The table H. has an end stop 1S. to allow the end of the book to rest on when in vertical. or non-readable position.
19 are stops on the arm D. to retain the sleeve 8 in endwise position on the arm.
Then the table together with the book is brought upward from an incline to ay vertical position. as shown in broken lines in Fig. l'. the spiral spring' materially ashold the support, and the book, in inclined lwith a wall\bracket having. 'aws a. book rest sists in the changing of said positions, the tension and tendency of the. spring being, to bear the table to vertical position.
K, is a pad on the Wall interposed between the face of the book and the wall, and may be used for advertising purposes, 'and more especially to protect the wall.`
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an open book rest, a wall bracket having jaws, a book rest, or support, provided with a casing received between thejaws, a combined pivot and clamping device through the jaws and casing, and said casing adapted for pivoting the book support between the jaws, a spring actuating device bearing on the bracket and the casing to readable position.
2. In anopen book rest, the combination or table providedl with a casing adapted to swing between the jaws, a spring actuating device in the casing, and bearing thereon, and on the bracket to hold the support. and the open book, in readable position.
3. In an open book rest, the combination i with an arm, having a flat upper side, of a sleeve of resilient nature embracing and adapted to tilt thereon in opposite directions, and provided with a flange which is adapted to rest on the fiat part of the arm,
and an open book Supporting table, or rest,V
carried by said flange.
4. In an open book rest, a wall bracket having jaws extending therefrom, an arm having an e'nd transverse casing received between the jaws and adapted.' to swing therein, a table on the arm, a spring actuating device in the casing and bearing thereon, and on the bracket to hold the arm and the table, together with an open book on the WILLIAM J. WALSH.
