FREDERICK WV. HILL, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE CHANDLER ADJUSTABLE CHAIR AND DESK COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ADJUSTABLE' TOP FOR DESKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 559,330, dated April 28, 1896 Application filed October 2, 1895. Serial No. 564,433. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. HILL, a
citizen of. the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Tops for Desks and other Furniture, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in adjustable tops for desks and similar furniture, and it is especially designed for use on school-desks in which it is desirable to adjust the front of the desk-top to and from the scholar as well as to provide means for varying the inclination of the desk-top according to the work to be done, as will hereinafter be more fully shown and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein I Figure 1 represents a top plan View of the improved desk, showing its top in a normal closed position. Fig. 2 represents a similar View showing the top inclined toward the front and showing a portion of the top broken away. Fig. 3 represents an enlarged crosssection on the line 3 3, shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. at represents an enlarged cross-section on the line 4 4, shown in Fig. 2.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings.
A represents the desk-body, on which B B are the sides and C the back, as usual. The front of the desk is of the open kind, as shown in the drawings.
D represents the adjustable top, normally supported 011 the upper edges of the sidesB B and back C, as represented in Figs. 1 and 3.
To the under side of the top D are pi voted at e e the preferably slotted links E E, which are adjustably secured to the sides 13 B by means of screw-bolts f f going through said links and perforations in the sides B B and fastened to the latter by means of nuts F F, arranged on the outside of the sides B B, as shown.
To the under side of the top D are secured guide-bars G G, which are slotted, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and are guided 011 pins or bolts g g, secured to the forward ends of the sides B B, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4/ The guide-bars G G and their connections to the front ends of the desk serve to prevent the raising of the forward portion of the desktop D, and also serve to hold the forward part of said desk-top connected to the front portions of the desk sides B B after the desk-top has been adjusted in a more or less inclined position and secured by means of the links E E and their adjustable fastening devices, as described.
The guide-pins g g, in connection with the guide-bars G G, also serve as stops to limit the backward adjustment of the desktop relative to its support, as fully shown in Fig. 3.
In adjusting the position of the desk-top it is only necessary to loosen the nuts F F, by which the linksE E are released, after which the desk-top D may be drawn more or less forward and tipped to the required inclination and secured in such adjusted position simply by tightening the nuts F F, the adjusted parts being then retained in the position as fully shown in Fig. l.
The device is very simple in construction, can be most readily manipulated by unskilled hands, and by its means a desk-top may be easily inclined and adjusted to and. from the occupant, as may be desired, from time to time to meet requirements.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim- In a school-desk or other furniture, the combination with the desk-body, of an adjustable top having secured to its under side slotted guide-bars Gr, pivot-bolts g secured in the forward ends of the sides of the desk and passing through said slotted guide-bars, and slotted links E pivotally connected at their upper ends to the rear under side of the desktop and adjustably secured to the sides of the desk by screw-bolts f, whereby said desk-top may be either adjusted longitudinally in a two subscribing Witnesses, on this 21st day of horizontal direction on the desk-top, tilted September, A. D. 1895.
about the pivot-bolts g as a center or silnul- I taneously tilted and adjusted longitudinally, FREDERICK HILL 5 substantially as described. \Vitnesses:
In testimony whereof I have signed my ALBAN ANDRI'IN,
name to this specification, in the presence of HENRY R. PAGE.
