COMBINATION PIPE-WRENCH AND PIPE-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 13, 1912.
Application filed September 19, 1910. Serial No. 582,665.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLEREwooD Ln OLERE LYONS, a citizen of the'United States, residing at Willows, in the county of Glenn, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Piperenches and Pipe-Cutters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in tools and particularly to a pipe wrench and pipe cutter combined, the object of the invention being to produce a tool which will be an absolutely effective pipe wrench, the same structure having an attachment whereby it may be used as a pipe cutter.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete device showing it in use as a pipe wrench. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of the outer end of the tool showing it in use as a pipe cutter. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of the outer arm of the device. Fig. 5 is an end view of the cutter blades. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 7 is an end view of the guide. Fig. 8 is a side view of the same. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a pipe protector.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference, I first provide a body member or handle 1 having an outer curved arm member 2 having a sectional slot 3. The outer end of the arm member 2 is serrated or roughened as at 4 to form a grip for the pipe 5, the pipe being engaged by the chain 6 pivoted at the base of the member 2 and projected from the pipe 5 over the end of the member 2, thence over a projecting frame 7 projected at right angles to the member 2, said chain 6 then engaging a hook 8 on a sliding block 9 considerably over the member 1 and actuated by means of a threaded rod 10 moving therethrough and journaled at 11 on the member 1, said rod 10 having an outer cross head or handle 12 for operation. When the rod 10 is turned, it screws through the block 9, moving the block rearwardly on the member 1 and tightening the chain 6 around the pipe 5 causing it to be impinged by the surface 4 which permits it to be turned or unscrewed as may be desired. To permit a greater leverage if desired the members 12 may be turned in and thrown into alinement with the member 10 as shown, and then a pipe or other tubular member may be inserted over the member 10 forming a projected handle, thus giving a greater leverage. If desired to loosen the pipe the rod 10 would be moved in the opposite direction, thus causing the block 9 to move toward the outer end, thus releasing the chain as required.
The above describes the device as it is used as a pipe wrench. I will now describe it as it is used as a pipe cutter.
J ournaled in the frame 7 is a pin 13 having a circular cut blade 14 projecting upon the edge of said frame 7 as shown. ournaled in the member 2 within the slot 3 is a pin 15 having a slight flanged edge 16, such flange 16 being in alinement with the cutting blade 14. The pipe to be cut is placed between members 2 and 7 against the members 14 and 16 and then the chain 6 is placed therearound and connected with the hook 8 and the block 9 moved as described by the rod 10 until the said pipe is firmly clenched against the blade 14 and then the entire tool is turned upon the pipe, the blade 14 cutting it as is desired and the flange 16 fitting into the incision made by the blade 14, and acting as a guide to keep the pipe from shifting and the incision from getting out of the proper alinement. To keep the pipe from being injured by the chain or the incision from being clogged I provide a protecting blade 17 which fits between the chain 6 and the pipe 5 and has a hook 18 to engage one of the links of the chain 6 and hold the protector in proper position.
From the foregoing description, it will readily appear that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail I 1. A tool as described comprising a han- 'dle having a jaw adapted to receive a pipe,
a cutting blade in said jaw, a chain secured in said handle member and adapted to extend around said pipe and said jaw, means for securing said chain in fixed position, a protecting blade adapted to be disposed between said chain and said pipe, said blade having a hook adapted to project through one of the links of said chain as described.
2. A combination wrench and pipe cutter comprising a handle member having a curved arm on its upper end, a serrated edge on the outer curved surface of said arm, a chain secured at the base of said arm and adapted to receive a pipe between it and said serrated edge, a frame projecting at right angles to the inner curved surface of said arm, a rotating cutting blade mounted in said frame said chain being adapted to receive a pipe between itself and said arm and said cutting blade and means for moving said chain as described.
3. A combination wrench and pipe cutter comprising a handle member, an upper curved arm on said handle member, said arm having a longitudinal slot, such slot being closed at the'upper end of said arm, a frame projecting at right angles to said arm, a rotating cutting blade mounted in said frame, a rotating guide mounted on said arm in alinement with said rotating cutting blade, a block slidable over said handle member, a hook on said block, a threaded rod journaled in the end of said handle member and extending through said sliding block and a chain secured at the base of said curved arm and adapted to engage said hook as described.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
