ADJUSTABLE HANGING LAMP.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SWIFT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn of the city of New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hanging Lamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof.

The object of my invention is to provide means which may be detaohably connected to a gas fixture or chandelier of ordinary construction whereby a lamp may be adjusted both in vertical and horizontal planes in order to arrange the lamp in any desired position and throw the light in any desired direction.

The further objects of the invention will be more fully set forth in the following description of one form of apparatus embodying my invention, which consists in the new and novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.

In the accompanying drawingFigure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved apparatus showing the lamp in diiferent positions. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a modified form of the apparatus. Fig. 3 is a detail view in section showing a modified form of the support.

The lamp 1 is mounted upon a rod or tube 2 and the gas or other illuminating fluid is supplied to the lamp by a flexible pipe or tube 3 from any suitable gas supply, as the supply pipe 4 of the chandelier 5, which is of ordinary construction. The lower portion of this flexible tube is preferably held against the rod 2 by any suitable means, such as the clamps 6. The rod is adjustably mounted in a bracket 7 having one or more extensions 8 provided with a passage or passages 9 therethrough. Said bracket is fixed upon an arm 10 secured to or formed integrally with a support 11, which is mounted upon the supply pipe of the chandelier, preferably between the same and the pillar 12. Said support may consist of a perforated plate 13, but preferably comprises a hollow barrel 14: and extensions 15, said barrel being internally threaded at one end so as to be attached to the gas supply pipe, and exteriorly threaded at its opposite end to receive the pillar.

used, such as a tube 16. In this case, the flexible pipe or tube 3, which is connected to the chandelier at one end, is connected at its other end to the upper end of said pipe or tube 16, thus permitting a shorter flexible tube to be used.

In order to secure the rod or tube and the lamp in position after the same have been adjusted in the desired vertical or horizontal plane, a collar 17 is mounted on said rod or tube and secured thereto by any suitable means as a set screw 18. If desired, the collar may be arranged above the bracket 7. but preferably is mounted between the extensions 8. As shown in Fig. 3, however, the extensions may be formed integrally with a sleeve 19 provided with a set screw whereby the rod or tube may be held in ad justed position.

By this construction, it is evident that the lamp may be readily aflixed to or detached from a permanent fixture and may be easily raised or lowered within the limits determined by the length of the rod or tube and the flexible connection. It is obvious also that the lamp can be swung from side to side in a horizontal plane as desired. Consequently, a simple and etlicient means is provided for adjusting the position of the lamp and for throwing the light in the desired location. In case the lamp is arranged above a table or desk it can be quickly raised so as to leave the same unobstructed when the lamp is not in use without disconnecting the lamp from the supply pipe as is necessary when an ordinary drop light is used.

I claim as my invention:

1. The combination with a gas fixture, comprising a supply pipe and .a pillar, of a support comprising a barrel arranged between said pipe and pillar and having a passage for the gas therethrough, a depending arm movably secured to said barrel having brackets thereon, a hollow lamp supporting tube movably mounted in said brackets, a flexible gas supply connection between the pillar and the tube and means for holding the tube in its adjusted position.
