Description
liutml mes FREDERICK KILIAN,
OF NEW YORK, N.
Lette/rs Patent No. 101,628, dated April 5, 1870.
IMPROV'IED FOLDING CHAIR. r
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part o! the ruim.
I do hereby declare the following to be ',a full, clear,
and exact description therof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l is a sectional side elevation, which shows the chair ready for use.
Figure 2 shows it folded together.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to iblding chairs, and consists in a peculiar construction and arrangement oi' parts whereby simplicity and economy of construct-ion are obtained; and t-lie boi-toni and back of the chair are made capable of two different positions or inclinations when set up for use, and, when folded together, to be set aside or for transportation, it is still supported upright on its feet.
The letter A designates the back of the chair. It extends in one piece ii'oni the Adoor to the extreme height of the chair, and its lower ends form the fi'oiit feet, and its upper end is made with a curve, whose l concavity is toward the front ofthe chair.
iliat part of the back which is above the level of the14 seat is wholly or partly upholstered, as shown at l.
The. letter C designates the part which ibrms the hind feet.
The parts A and C are pivoted t-o each other at I), at a point nearly at the center ofthe part C.
Ihe part A, as well as the part G, are not each a single piece of wood or iron, but are made of several ypieces composing a fra-me, which are united by rods E at the bottom, and are otherwise suitably connected together.
To the upper end of the part O I pivot the forward ends of the side hais F of the seat G.
The said side bars F have longitudinal slots, il, cxtending nearly fi'oin cud to end ofthe bars, and which slots receive pins I, that project from thc sides of the back A of the chair into the slots, so as to connect the seat or its bars to the back.
In fig. 1 the pins I are represented :is heilig at tho bottoms of the slots l-l, where thc pins are arrested, and the further outward movement of the parts A C is prevented, the seat G being thereby secured, so that the chair is ready `to be occupied.
The slots H in theside bars or sides of the Seat G enable me to vary the angle at which the seat and the back are arranged with regard to each other, as I will next explain.
This variation I accomplish by forming notches, J, along the edges ofthe slots H, which notches` are intended to receive the pins I, and hohl the back A and the seat Gat various positions, so :is to make them more nearly straight or more inclining, as desired.
Only one side or end of the chair is shown in the drawing, but the opposite 'side is made in the same manner, and with the'sanie parts and slots as the side. that appears iu the view.
IVheii it is desired to fold tho chair, the tops of the part A C are simply drawn toward each other until the back A and the outer part of the seat G touch each other, when the feet ot' said parts A and C will remain apart farenough to forni a support foi` the chair in its folded state, so that it can continue' to stand upright. This result I accomplish by curving the part C inward from the pivot D to its top, so that,
when the top of the part or leg C comes against the back, the legs will remain asunder a sufiicient distance to make the chair, in its folded sta-te, seltsupportiug. The topof the seat Gis upholstered, and tliepivot,
which connects it to the leg C, is the rod which holds the front of the seat-frame together.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Ihe combination and arrangement together in a folding chair of the parts A C G and pins I, the side bars or sides of the seat G heilig slotted, as shown, and provided with adjusting notches J, and the upper part of' the leg C being curved inward, substantially as and for the purpose described.
This specification signed hy rnc this 20th day ol' January, 1870.
Fil. KILIAN.
