WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 30, 1912.
Application filed February 11, 1911. Serial No. 608.011.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY W. MELDR M, a citizen of the United States, residing at East St. Louis, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches and more particularly to a combination wrench designed for all the various purposes usually subserved by a pipe and nut Wrench, as separately constructed, and my invention consists in certain novel featuresof construction and combination of parts, the preferred form whereof will be hereinafter clearly set forth and pointed out in the claim.
The object of my invention, among others, is to provide a combination wrench suitable for use upon nuts of various size and also for reliably efficient action upon pipes of varying diameter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my wrench complete, while, Fig. 2 shows a longitudinal sectional view of the movable jaw on a slightly enlarged scale from that presented in Fig. 1.
Referring by numerals to the various details of my invention and cooperating accessories, 1 indicates the handle proper having the preferably integral head or fixed jaw 2, one end of which is adapted for action upon nuts, while the other end is provided with a plurality of teeth or corrugations 3 for action upon pipes, rods, and the like. Designed to cooperate with the fixed jaw or head, is a movable jaw 4 having a central opening of proper size to loosely move upon the handle 1, the latter being provided upon one edge with a plurality of ratchet teeth 5 designed to cooperate with the ratchet teeth upon a movable or adjustable wedge member 6, while the outer edge of said wedge member is tapered to fit a corresponding seat within the jaw 4:, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The adjustable wedge member 6 is held within its seat, thus provided in the movable jaw, so that it may not casually drop out of its operative position, by means of a pin 7 permanently secured thereto and extending through an opening or slot 8 in a contiguous part of the movable jaw, as shown in Fig. 2, the said pin having a suitable handle or terminal 9, as clearly shown. It will be obvious that the office performed by the wedge member 6 is to lock the movable jaw at any desired point upon the handle member 1. The opposite end of the movable jaw 4 is also provided with a slotted opening 10 and seated within said opening is a spring member 11 anchored in position in any preferred way, as by a screw 12.
To the operating face of the movable jaw, I mount the ratchet faced member 13 designed to cooperate with the ratchet face 3 of the fixed jaw, said member 13 being mounted upon the free end of the spring member 11, either permanently or removably, as by the anchoring screw 14, and it is therefore obvious that the space or opening 10 affords a limitation of movement for the said member 13, thus permitting said member 13 to accommodate itself to the strain placed thereon incident to the use of the pipe wrench.
As indicated by Fig. 1 of the drawings, it is obvious that the ratchet faced member 13 is so mounted that it may move outward incident to applying the wrench to a pipe or bolt,'but will be normally drawn inward by the action of the spring 11. It is further obvious that the said member 13 is limited in its outer movement by the extent of the opening 10.
It is thought from the foregoing, that the operation or manner of using my improved wrench will be clearly apparent, though it may be stated that the movable jaw may be readily moved upon the handle portion by withdrawing the wedge member 6, and when the movable jaw has thus been adjusted in the desired position, said wedge member is forced home in its seat, thereby causing the ratchet teeth thereon to cooperate with the ratchet teeth 5 upon the handle.
It will thus be seen that I have produced a wrench of reliable efliciency designed for the double purpose of operation upon nuts, square rods and the like and also upon pipes, bolts, etc.
What I claim is A wrench comprising a handle portion, a fixed jaw on the handle and having a toothed face, a movable jaw slidable thereon provided with a longitudinal recess substantially parallel therewith, an auxiliary toothed member comprising a Wedge shaped block seated loosely on the face of the mov- In testimony whereof I have signed my able jaw opposite the toothed face of the name to this specification in the presence fixed jaw, and a spring secured to the inner of two subscrlb'ing Witnesses.
