This invention relates to compressing ma chines and more particularly to machines for compressing and molding heelsior top lifts for boots or shoes. The present-invention may with advantage be embodied in a machine of the type disclosed in U. S. Letters Patent No. 776,823, granted December 6, 1904. In compressing machines of this type some difiiculty has heretofore been ex- 1 perienced at times owing .to the accidental jamming of a heel or top lift blank in the mold or the introduction of .a piece of mas. terial not of the proper size or form, ,sometimes resulting ,in failure of the ejecting mechanism and breakage of some of the parts of the machine.
One object of the present invention, ac-
cordingly, consists in the provision of an ejecting. mechanism for compressing chines, which shall be effective to e ect. a
compressed blank in the usual operation of the machine but which has provision for yielding when a blank becomes jammed in the mold, or other resistance causes excessive strain.
In a preferred form of constructlon, constituting oneembodiment of the invention,
which for purposes of illustration is herein after specifically described and shown in the accompanying drawings, the yielding feature previously referred to may be intro- I duced in a train of connections between a top lift platevertically movable within .the compressing mold and the means by which or spindle upon which the top lift plate ismounted.

The top lift plate constitutes the bottom of a mold 1n which a heel blank may be compressed and the said plunger is arranged to be engagedatcertain times during the operation ofthe machine by an arm secured to a rockshaft) journaled in the reciprocating crossheadzof themachine, all of which will clearly appear upon reference to the said patent.
According to the present invention, the heel ejecting plunger 2 depends from the top lift plate 4 whichconstitutes the bottom of a die or -mold 6 within which the blank 8 is compressed.
. 10 represents the vertically movable crosshead which is reciprocated during the operation of the machine. The plunger 2 is operated by an arm 12 which extends be- 22 which travels in a path 24 in a cam plate 26 which is secured upon a stationary part of the machine frame.
Adjacent to the arm 16 and secured to the rock-shaft 1,4 is an arm 28 having'its free or lower end in proximity to the hook shaped portion 18 of the lever 16. The arms .12 and 28, .both being secured to the rock-shaft 14, constitute a lever. The ends of the arms 28 and 16 are coupled together by a toggle 80, 32, the central joint 84 of which is connected by a plate 36 and spring 38 with the upperextremity of the arm 28 as shown at 40. The spring 38 connecting-the toggle arm 28. The toggle is arranged in such a manner that when in its extended condition it is not in a straight line but is held in a position approximating thereto by the spring 38 so that the toggle will not be prevented from breaking when excessive resistance is encountered by the machine. For this purpose the links 30 and 32, forming the elements of the toggle, are provided with cooperating stop p eces 42, 44, which normally maintain the toggle in a position approximating to a straight line as above set forth and as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
Each element of the toggle is connected to its respective arm or lever, preferably by an eccentric joint, as indicated at 46, so that the toggle may be adjusted in order to compensate for wear of the various parts or to provide means for adjusting the limits of the stroke of the ejector arm 12.
For operating the ejector mechanism the cam plate 26 performs its functions in a manner similar. to the corresponding element in the machine disclosed in the patent above referred to, the cam plate having a movable latch or switch 48 located in the cam recess 24. The switch 48 is pivoted to the plate 26 and has an arm 50 to which is attached a weight 52. The weight 52 nor-v mally holds the switch in a position extending across the cam recess, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, but permits the switch to be moved during the reciprocations of the crosshead 10. The switch 48 divides the cam recess into two parts. .When the reciprocating cross-head is rising the roll 22 carried on the lever 20 moves in the path to the right of the switch 48 and when the head is descending the roll moves in the path to the left of the said switch, all of which will be clearly apparent from an inspection of Figs. 1 and 3.
In the-operation of the ejector actuating means the downward movement of the reciprocating cross-head 10 causes the cam roll 22 on the arm 20 to be moved in the cam groove 24 and, through the arm 16, the
toggle 30, 32 and the arm 28, to oscillate the.
rock-shaft 14 and in consequence to move the ejector actuating lever 12 upwardly into such a position as to elevate the plunger 2 and plate 4 to eject the heel blank from the machine. Should, however, the blank become jammed and prevent the ejecting plunger 2 from being operated the excessive pressure will, on the continued descent of the head, be transmitted to the toggle joint through the arms aforesaid, which toggle,
owing to its slightly bent position, will now be completely broken against the tension of the spring 38, as clearly shown in Fig.3. During the reverse movement of the reciprocating head the spring 38 will restore the toggle to its normal or unbroken condition shown in Fig. 1.
The construction and arrangement of the parts described insures that damage to the machine and injury to the work, due to a blank becoming jammed or other obstructing causes, will be completely avoided.
While a preferred and eifective construction of the invention as applied to a heel compressing machine of the class disclosed in the U. S. patent hereinbefore referred to has been described in detail, it should be understood that the invention is not limited to the particular construction and arrangement of parts described, as these are capable of variation without departure from the spirit and scope of the invention which will be defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a compressing machine, the combination of an ejecting member for engaging a blank to be removed, a positively operated device for actuating said ejecting member and normally rigid connecting means between said actuating device and said ejecting member, said connecting means being arranged to yield when subjected to a predetermined excessive pressure and to readjust itself automatically when released from said pressure.
2. In a compressing machine, the combination of an ejecting member for engaging a blank to be removed, a positively operated device for actuating said ejecting member, and means comprising a normally extended toggle connecting said ejecting member and said actuating device, said toggle being breakable under a predetermined pressure.
3. In a compressing machine, the combination of an ejecting plunger,'a cam-operated lever for actuating said plunger and means connecting said lever and plunger comprising a normally extended toggle, said toggle being breakable under excessive pressure.
4. In a compressing machine, the combination of an ejecting member for engaging a blank to be ejected, a positively operated lever for actuating said ejecting member and connections between said lever and said member, said connections comprising a slightly bent toggle and a spring normally maintaining said toggle in its extended position but permitting said toggle to be broken when excessive resistance is encountered by the ejecting member.
