To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS LUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and Statccof Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Compressing-Machines, of which the. following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to machines for compressing articles of leather. The machine herein illustrated. constituting the preferred embodiment of the invention is intended more particularly for molding shoes hereinafter mentioned.
, In making shoes of certain kinds it is a common ractice to form the heel in part of a heel blank which tapers to a thin edge at the breast from a point a short distance in the rear of the breast edge. A wellknown example of this work is found in the production of spring heel shoes wherein a heel blank beveled at the breast edge is commonly inserted between the outersole and the insole to give the heel the desired height. Heel blanks which, have a thin breastfledge are also used in making shoes which are similar to spring heel shoes in that the heels thereof are of the same conblanks for use in heels of certain classes of tour viewed from [the side of the shoe as that of the heels of spring heel shoes,
although the. heel blank is secured to the outside of the outersole rather than the in-' side as in spring heel work. Heel blanks of the contour referred to have beenheretofore produced by beveling lifts to the desired shape in a skiving operation.

A feature of. the present invention consists .in a feeding and ejecting device constructed and arranged to insure that the compressed blank will be properly removed from the mold.' The invention is preferably embodied in the form of a device arranged to enter the mold and to engage and eject the compressed blank therefrom; and in the present application a construction has been selected, for the purpose of illustration, which comprises spring pressed pins mounted in the forward ends of the fingers of the feed slide and arranged to enter the mold and engage the compressed blank therein.
Other features of the invention will be hereinafter described.
In the drawings,-Figure 1 is a view in side elevation with parts in vertical section of a portion of a compressing machine constituting one embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of some of the parts shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 illustrates a blank before being operated upon by the machine, and Fig. 4: shows a molded blank.
The present embodiment of the invention is shown applied to a heel compressing machine of the type illustrated in U. S. Letters Patent 776,787, granted Dec. 6, 1904, to S. D. Leland, to which reference may be had for a disclosure of suitable mechanism for actuating the mold parts to be described. I
The parts shown herein comprise side dies 2 and a breast die 4 interconnected for simultaneous movement against the edges of a blank, as in the machine of the patent i referred to. .The bottom of the die cavity is formed by a plate 6 whichis raised and lowered to permit the insertion and removal of a blank as in the patented machine. The plate 6 is provided at its breast portion with a beveled surface 8 of uniform width from side to side of the plate. The top surface of the blank is'engaged by a follower 10 which is sustained in stationary position, the parts constituting the sides and bottom of the die cavity being mounted upon a head which is arranged for vertical movement to cause the blank to be subjected to vertical pressure between the bottom plate 6 and the'follower 10. The follower 10 is provided at its breast portion with a depending lip 12 which is of substantially the same width from side to side of the follower as the beveled surface 8 upon the plate 6. The acting surface of the lip 12 is shown as in: clined at a slightly sharper angle than the corresponding surface of the bottom plate 6.
The inclined surfaceiof the follower merges curve so that the portion'of the blank which lies at. the, junction of the two surfaces is rounded as indicated in Fig. 4:.

In the further upward movement of thehead the blank is engaged by the follower 10,.the lip 12 coming in contact with the breast edge of the blank before the blank is engagedby the remaino ing portion of the follower. The blank is thus firstsubjected torlateral pressure and thereafter to vertical pressure: wherebyit is condensed and solidified and is given the contour shown-in-Fig. 4. In the downward movement of the head the-plate 6 is raised to bring the compressed blank to the top of the die cavity from which it is removed by thefeed slide 1a in the further downward movement of the head.
Where the blanks to be operated upon are subjected to a preliminary beveling operation it is preferred that the blank be beveled upon the flesh side rather than the grain side. This permits a compressed blank to have a continuous grain surface upon its lower'side as indicated in-Fig. 4. This isof advantage in that the blank is made more :dense and firm than would be the case if'it were beveled upon the. grain side. This featureis particularly desirable where the blank is to be applied to the outside of the outersole and constitutes the tread surface of the heel. It'will be seen that in this location itjpermits the tread surface of the shoe to be of the grain side of 7 the leather 'over its entire area.
