COMBINED SPANKER AND BREASTER FOR BOOT OR SHOE MAKING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 600,264, dated March 8, 1898.
Application filed April 17, 1897.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LWILLIAM HIGGINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Spanker and Breaster for Boot or Shoe Making Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has reference to a novel construction of machines for attaching heel-sections to boots or shoes and trimming the same, said operations of the machine being termed, respectively, the spanking and breasting operations.
The primary object of this invention, therefore, is to provide a combined spanking and breasting mechanism for attaching and trimming heel-sections to boots or shoes, such attachment being employed, primarily, to spank the heel-section, which is placed by the operator upon the nails projecting from the heel portion made by other machinery and thereby attach said heel-section to the heel proper, and then, almost at the same instant, by the descent of a suitable cutter, trimming off or breasting that surface of the heel which is placed directly back of the sole of the bootor shoe.
lVith these ends in view the invention consists in the novel construction of a combined spanker and breaster for the purposes above stated, and also in novel arrangements and combinations of parts, as well as in the details of construction thereof, all of which will be fully set forth in the accompanying specification and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying sheets of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine embodying the principles of my present invention. Fig. 2 is a front view, on an enlarged scale, of the combined spanker and breaster; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical Serial N0- 63Z 587. (N0 model.)
section taken on line 3 3 in said Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on line 4 4 in Fig. Fig. 5 is a part section and elevation of the operating parts of the machine, illustrating the spanker in its operated position while causing the attachment of the heel-section to. the heel of the boot or shoe; and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the same parts, illustrating the trimmer or breaster in its operated position when the spanker is about to return to its initial position. Figs. 7 and 8 are detail views of a cam-action and guide for timing the movements of the spanker and breaster. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a combined cam sleeve and clutch secured upon the main driving-shaft for throwing in and out the operating mechanism of the machine, and Fig. 10 is a general perspective of the several parts comprising the combined spanker and breaster before they are assembled and operatively secured together.
Similar letters of reference are employed in all of said views to indicate corresponding parts.
In said drawings, A indicates the main frame of the machine, which can be secured upon a suit-able table I), having legs or supports 12, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1. The said main frame A of the machine is provided at its upper end with a suitable bearing portion a and a bearing-plate a, which is secured upon said portion a by means of bolts or screws a to form a bearing for the main operating-shaft c, which is provided with pulley-wheel c at one end for operating said shaft. The hub o of said wheel 0 is cut away, as at 0 and upon said shaft, adapted to slide in the space between the bearing of the standard A and said hub 0 is a clutch collar or sleeve d, having a projection or finger d,
which is in normal holding engagement with the slot 0 in said wheel 0', when an actuating rod or bar 6 has its end 6 withdrawn from a pair of cam-shaped projections d forming a guide on said sleeve d. Said rod or bar e, which is operatively arranged in certain hearing portions in a pair of arms a and a, extending from the back of the standard and has a spring 9 arranged between said arms a and a and encircles said rod, extends down through an opening in said standard A and to the position illustrated in Fig. 6, and when l the projections 01 on said clutch-sleeve d are brought around to the position illustrated in Fig. 1, then the cam-surfaces of said projections will slide against a correspondinglyformed surface on said end piece 6 of the rod e, whereby the clutch-sleeve will slide laterally on the shaft 0, which throws the breaster mechanism out of operation. Said clutch-collar (1 will thus be thrown out of gear with the wheel a as long as the operator does not depress the foot-lever 6 but when said lever isforced down then the end 6 of the rod e will be withdrawn from its operative engagement with the clutch-collar d and a' suitable spring 01 encircling the shaft 0, will immediately cause operative contact between i saidclutch-collar and the wheel a, as will be clearly evident.
forward portions of the bearing-part a and the plate a are enlarged, as at a and a", respectively, and rotatively arranged in said enlarged portions of and a is a disk-like part aficonnected with the main shaft 0, said disk- 5 like part 0 being provided with an on twardlyextending stud or pin 0 forming a crankwrist, substantially as illustrated. Secured to the two ends of the said portions (1 and a and against the front thereof by means of suitable bolts f are a pair of guides f and f,
provided with V shaped or other suitablyshaped guiding surfaces or ways f ,'as clearly illustrated in Fig. 8. Adapted to slide up and down between said guides f and f is the spanker, consisting, essentially,of a rectangular plate h, having V-shaped or other suitable guiding portions h, which fit into the correspondingly-formed ways f of the guides f and f, and with an opening 71, in which is loosely fitted and capable of a lateral sliding motion therein a plate 71, having an opening t", bounded by eccentrically-arranged curves 1?, i and 4?, .whereby a yoke is provided working upon said crank-wrist c hereinabove mentioned, as will be clearly evident from Figs. 3, 5, 6, and 7. Thus it will be seen that when the pulley-wheel c operates the shaft 0 said wrist-pin 0 will actagainstthe cam or eccentric surfaces i i and i of the yoke 11, causing a vibratory motion of the spankerplate h. p
As will be seen from Figs. 1, 2, and 3, on the table '1) of the, machine I have secured a plate j; having. guide-bars j, .and adapted to slide between said bars on the plate j is a second plate is, having an arm .70, provided with abearing portion 10 having a smooth bore and a slot 10 as clearly shown in Fig. 2;
Beneath said bearing portion 10 is a sleeve -to the top of the frame of the machine.
to cause the raising or lowering of a hub I in said sleeve 10 To prevent the turning of said hub is when said sleeve 10 is turned, said hub 10 has a slight projection or pin 70", which extends into said slot 70 in the bearing portion 10 The operation of these parts will be clearly understood from an inspection of said Fig. 2. It will also be seen from said Fig. 2 that said hub 706 is provided with a chamber 10 and a slight projection is". In said chamber 10 is a springm of suitable resilience, and resting upon said spring is a jack n, provided with a longitudinal slot or groove it, into which said projection 10 extends to return said jack at all times in its proper position.
The standard A of the machine is provided with a suitable bracket a having a bearing a and a spring-actuated adj usting-screw a in said bearing, said screw being provided with aholder a made ofspring metal, which is arranged directly above the support 41 of the jack n and consists, essentially, of a pair f of spring-arms a, between which the heel As will be seen from Figs. 3, 5, and 6, the
portion of the unfinished boot or shoe is forced and held in its proper position ready for spanking the heel-section upon the heel as the spanker moves down upon the same, as clearly indicated more especially in Fig. 1;
To return to the construction ofthe spanker, said plate his provided on the front with a pair of guide-bars h having grooves or ways h, in which are loosely arranged the vertical guides l and Z of a breaster-plate 5, provided with a pair of perforated ears or lugs Z and a pair of outwardly-extending and screw-threaded lugs Z into which are screwed a pair of adj listing-screws Z In said perforated ears or lugs Z I have secured a bolt or pin 0 and a link 0', connected therewith, the other end of said link being attached to a pin 0 secured in a pair of perforated ears or lugs p of a block 19, which is secured by means of a bolt or screw p encircled by a spring 103 in the socketed end r of a lever r, fulcrumed at r in a bearing 8, securely attacheg spring r is attached at or near the said socketed end 1' to the said lever andalso to a frame 15, secured to the guide-bars f and f or to any other suitable part of the machine, which spring causes said lever r to assume the position indicated in the several figures of the drawings, with a roller or wheel 7' in the opposite end of said lever in constant rolling engagement with the sleeve cl on the shaft 0 and at times with a suitable cam projection d on said sleeve, for the purposes to be more fully set forth hereinafter.
As will be seen from Figs. 1, 2, and 10, the breaster-plate l, hereinabove mentioned, has a pair of holes Z and adjustably arranged between a pair of projections Z on said plate is a knife or cutter it, having a pair .of slotted and screwed into the holes Z in said plate Z, for adjustably securing the knife or cutter a to said plate. The lower cutting portion u of said knife is suitably curved to conform with the shape of the back surface of the heel to be trimmed. Upon the face of the knife or cutter "a is lug a for receiving the screw-threaded end a of a stop-bar a having a flattened and comparatively broad end M, which is brought down upon the sole of the shoe directly in front of the heel, and if properly adjusted in said lug a will regulate the downward sliding motion of the knife or cutter and the breaster-bar and prevents the knife or cutter from passing into the sole of the boot or shoe after the heel has been trimmed, which would ruin the usefulness of the boot or shoe. Said bar a is provided with a flattened portion u and is held in its adjusted position in the lug a by means of a set-screw a and 20 is a lock-nut screwed upon the screw portion of said rod to prevent the loosening or slipping of the rod 'L6 or bar 1&5 in said lug a when the machine is in constant use.
The operation of the machine is as follows: After all the parts of the several pieces of mechanism hereinabove described are properly adjusted and the pulley-Wheel c operated by means of a belt the foot-lever e is oper ated to cause the clutch-collar cl to come in operative holding contact with the hub of the wheel 0. A shoe with its heel portion in rough condition is placed upon the support n of the jack n with the heel portion between the arms a of the holding device a The last heel-section is then placed upon the projecting ends of the nails in the unfinished heel, and the spanker It being operated, as has been described, descends and securely fast-ens said heel-section upon the heel of the boot or shoe. The operation of the wrist-pin c in the yoke t is such that when the said spanker-plate his upon the heel, as illustrated in Fig. 5, the cam projection d on the sleeve cl will tilt the lever r, and by means of the link 0 will cause the breaster-plate Zto move down alongside the spanker-plate h in the guides therein and forcibly bring the blade or knife down upon the inner edge of the heel, as clearly indicated in Fig. 6, to properly trim or breast said edge of the heel, as will be clearly understood. The stop bar or rod u hereinabove mentioned is also brought down, and its portion 10 coming in contact with the sole of the boot or shoe, will limit the cutting operation of the knife or cutter u to prevent injury to the sole of the shoe.
The springs m and p serve to diminish the force of the blows when the parts of the machine are in operation and act as suitable cushioning devices to reduce the wear and tear of the several parts and prevent anyliability of the breaking of the parts.
By means of mypresent invention I have devised a simple and operative machine for spanking and breastiug heels for boots and shoesthat is, attaching the last heel-section to the heel portion and simultaneously trimming the inner edge of the heel.
Of course it will be evident that many changes may be made in the details of construction and general arrangements of the several parts of the machine herein set forth without departing from the scope of my in,- vention. Hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the parts herein shown and described.
