Letters Patent No. 101,561, dated April 5, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURLING-ROD ToR PAPiBR CIGAR -LIGHTERS.
The Schedule referred .to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, WILLIAM D. YOUNG, of "South Pittsburg, county of Allegheny, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Curling-Rod, of which the following is a specification. Y
My invention consists in the construction of a round tapering rod with a slot cut vertically in the end thereof. The object of myinvention is to curl slips of paper into the form of tapers which are used forlighting cigars, gas, or lamps.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention.

Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the manner of using my invention.
I make the rod A of any suitable material, either of iron, steel, or brass, one-eighth of an inch in diameter and twelve inches long, and grind it a uniform taper from end to end. I then cut the vertical slot 0 in the end, half aninc-h in length.
To use my invention take a slip of paper, as 1'), fig. 2.; insert the end or corner in the slot 0; turn the rod A until the paper is all taken up; then push the paper off the rod and. bend it at the end to prevent unraveling, and the taper is formed.
I do not confine myself to any size, proportion, or kind of material, as the same may be varied to suit the judgment of the mechanic making and using it.
I claim as my invention- The tapering rod A, in combination with the vertical slot 0, as a new article of manufacture, viz, a curling-rod, the whole being constructed and operating as herein described, and substantially as set forth.
