To all whom t may concemf Be it known that we, CHARLES T. WILT and ELMER E. WILT, citizens of the United States, and residents of Chicago, in the county of Cok and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunks; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in trunks and is intended more particularly for use in connection with sample trunks for use by traveling salesmen.

The invention consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

The object of the invention is to provide a trunk having a detachable lid to which are connected legs adapted to be folded into the lid out of the way when the lid is in place on the trunk and to be folded outward to form upright support-s for the lid when the lid is detached from the trunk body, so as to make a table of the lid, which may be used by the salesman for displacing his goods.

In the drawings z-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a trunk provided with our improvements, one part of the lid of the trunk being broken away to show the inner construction. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lid removed from the trunk and set up as a table. Fig. 3 is a partial detail crosssection of the' lid on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, with the leg in upright position. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the leg folded into the trunk.

A indicates the trunk and B the lid. The lid is connected to the trunk in any convenient manner so as to be bodily detachable therefrom, as, for example, by the snap hooks C, C and the lock D which are duplicated on the back of the trunk, or it may be removably connected to the body of the trunk in any other suitable manner. The upper wall b of the lid is preferably constructed so as to have a smooth outer surface within its margins in order to present an unbroken table top surface when'used as a table.

E indicates legs which are adapted to be folded into the lid out of the way when the trunk lid is attached to the body of the trunk 'or to be folded into an upright position as indicated in Fig. 2, when the lid may be used as a table. Each leg E is connected to the top wall b of the lid by means of a suitable hinge c and when folded into the lid is adapted to lie in contact with the inner surface of said top wall. It is preferably 1ocated in the corner formed by the two meeting vertical walls of the lid and is arranged so that when it is in an upright position, as indicated in Fig. 2, one corner of the leg will engage within the corner formed by said two meeting Vertical walls of the lid.

Any convenient mechanism may be used for holding the legs in folded and in upright relation to the lid. In the present example, a spring F is secured to the adjacentL vertical wall b1 of the lid and is provided with a hooked part f adapted to engage the side e of the leg and hold the leg in an upright position in engagement with said wall b1. Said spring also has a fiat member f1 beyond said hook which is adapted to engage the adjacent side e1 of the leg, as indicated `in Fig. 4, and hold said leg in folded position with its side e2 in frictional engagement with the vertical wall b2 of the lid, when the lid is not in use as a table.

We claim as our invention A trunk comprising a body and a detachable lid, said lid having a flat top and side and end walls, legs hinged to said lid and adapted to be folded into said lid when the same is attached to the trunk body and to be folded outwardly into an upright position to support the lid when said lid is detached from said trunk, and means for locking said legs Yin both positions.
