Specification of Letters Patent.
, Application filed January 19, 1909. Serial No. 473,102.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD GARNEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Glendale, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding-Pads, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to manifolding pads, and more especially to the means for retaining said pads in position upon the back or cover.
One of the objects is to provide a device of this kind which will be easy of operation and by means of which the pad will he securely held in position.
Another object is to provide a device which is so constructed that the pad may be.
formed with a much smaller stublthan usual. whereby more writing space may be provided for the same length of pad.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention, accordingly, consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring1 to the illustrative embodiment shown in t e drawings, 1 indicates a back to which a suitable cover 2 is preferably attached in the usual manner. Mounted upon the back is a pocket preferably formed of sheet metal and comprising an abutment 3 and side members 1 and 5. Pivotally secured to one of said side members, as 4;, is one end of an arm 6 preferably formed of spring metal and provided at its free end with an enlarged head 7 adapted to engage the outer surface of the side member 5 when the free end of the rod is engaged within a slot or recess 8 formed in said side member, whereby the arm will be retained in operapressure upon the enlarged head in a direc-y tiontoward the rear of the pad will move Patented Jan. 23,1912.

While the pad may be of any well known construction, I have shown it as composed of a plurality of superimposed sheets each of which is folded upon itself to form origithe position indicated in dotted lines in nal and duplicate leaves 9 and 10 united to one another along a weakened line 11, and the duplicate leaf is united to an end portion12 alonga weakened line 13. Suitable fastening means, such as staples 14,pass
through these end portions to retain the i sheets in their superimposed,position, and a sheet of transferring material 15 is prefer ablysecured to the upper part of the pad by means of thev fastening devices 14 and is adapted to overlie the pad as indicated in Fig. 1. The fastening devices 14 may be inserted through the end portions 12 of the sheets near their outer extremities, and the spring arm 6 may be so positioned with re spectto the abutment 3 that when it is in position it will extend close to said retaining means, as indicated in Fig. 3.
The operation of the device, whichshould be obvious from the above description, is as follows: When it is desired to place a'pad in position upon the back 1, the spring arm 6 is released from its, retaining recess 8 and swung upward to -the dotted position indicated in Fig. 2. The pad is then placed upon the back with its stub end adjacent the abutment 3. A plurality of the sheets are then raised and the spring arm inserted between the bottom sheet of the raised por tion and the top sheet of the remaining portion, after which the arm" is pressed down and locked in position in the manner above described, thereby retaining the pad firmly we I upon the back with its stub end resting against the abutment. I Any suitable inscriptions may be made upon the exposed original leaf which will be transferred to the duplicate leaf in the usual manner by the transferringmedium, after which the original .andduplicate leaf may be torn from the stub by grasping the original leaf'and, by
a sidewise movement, tearing the duplicate leaf from its end portion along the weakened line 13. The next succeeding original leaf is then withdrawn from under the transferring medium, the corner of which is preferably cut oif, as indicated at 16, for the purpose of giving access to said original sheet, which, after being drawn out, is then laid over the transferring medium and the pad is ready for anotherinscription.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device for retaining the pad in position by means of which the entire surface of the pad is exposed.
The device is simple and easy of operation and pads may be quickly removed or placed in position upon the back. As the retaining arm is placed in close proximity to the retaining means which hold the sheets together, the stub may be made much smaller than usual, thus providing addi tional space for recording purposes for the same length of pad, a feature which is very important, as the saving of even a fraction of a cent for each pad means a great saving in the manufacture of these devices.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently Widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and spe cific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention, which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a pad, of a support therefor, a sheet metal member secured to said support, an upwardly bent end thereof forming an abutment for said pad, upwardly bent sides to said member adapted to prevent a lateral movement of said pad, a resilient member adapted to be interposed between adjacent leaves of said pad, to prevent a withdrawal thereof, hinged to one of said sides, and means associated with the other of said sides adapted to engage and hold said resilient member when sprung into proper position.
2. In a manifolding pad, in combination, a back, side members extending upwardly therefrom, a rear abutment connecting said side members, a pad comprising a plurality of sheets adapted to be placed between said side members, one of said side members being turned over at its upper edge, and a spring arm adapted to be inserted between any two adjacent sheets of said pad to retain the same upon said back and having an offset portion adapted to coact with the turned over portion of said side member to form a hinge, said arm being adapted to interlock with the other of said side members.
3. In a manifolding pad, in combination, a back, side members extending upwardly therefrom, a rear abutment connecting said side members, a pad comprising a plurality of sheets adapted to be placed between said side members, one of said side members being turned over at its upper edge, a spring arm adapted to be inserted between any two adjacent sheets of said pad to retain the same upon said back and having an ofiset portion adapted to coact with the turned over portion of said side member to form a hinge, and arecess in the other of said side members opening upwardly in a direction toward said abutment and within which the free end of said arm is adapted to be sprung and retained against the pull exerted thereon by the removal of sheets from said pad.
