D. C. RIPLEY, J R., OF BIRMINGHAM, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNR TO RIPLEY & C0., OF SAME PLACE.'
mseovnmnn 1N'4 GLASS LAMPS The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of. the same.
Be it known that I, D. C. RrPLEY, J r., of Birminglham borough, in the. county of Allegheny and State of' Eennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Iruprov'ement in Glass Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my lamp, illustrative of its use both as a hand and a -Wall lamp, and Figure 2 shows the fastening for hanging it to a wall.
Like letters of reference indicatev like parts in each.
My invent-ion consists in attaching a metallic handle to a glass lamp by passing the eye ofthe handle over` the neck of the lamp, and securing it between the bowl of the lamp and the burner-fastening by cementing the latter onto the extremity of the neck, and in adapting such a lamp for use as a wall-lamp.
To enable others skilled in theart toinake and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its mode of construction.
The lamp-bowl a is made of' anydesired form, and in any way known to the art.
From any suitable metal or metallic compound I make, byl'orging or casting, a handle, b, such handle having an eye at one end ot' the proper size to pass neatly over the glass neck of the lamp-bowl a, which neck may be made a little longer than usual, it' so desired.
Having placed the Aeye b' on the neck of the bowl a,
I then attach the collar or burner-fastening c, with cement or in other known way, seating it, however, well down onto the eyeb', sov as to hold the latter firmlyl in place but, if so desired, the eye b may be cemented have hereunto set my hand.
on, or it andthe outside of the neck of the bowl may be made slightly oblong or elliptical, and both of corresponding size,'so as to fit neatly together, in which case it will be impossibleior work loose on the neck.
-flhc eye b and fastening c may be made in one piece, if so desired, and cemented on.
The opposite end d of the handle may be made` ot ring-form, as indicated by dotted lines, or of a hookshapeas shown, or of other desi red form. suitable for convenient use in carrying.
As, shown it is adapted for being carried about as an ordinary hand-lamp, or to be hung to the wall as '-a bracket-lamp. In the latter' use a clip, e, attached to the wall is only necessary, or other suitable form of ot' eye or socket, such that, when the ho'ok l is inserted therein, it will have a snfiicient bearing-surface against the wall or face of the eye or socket to be held in the desired position. l
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Attaching a metallic handle to a glass lamp by passing the eye of the handle over the neck of' the lamp, and cementing the burner-fastening to the extrcmity of the neck, substantially as described.
2. A metallic handle of a glass lamp, having au outer hook end, d, suitable for use with a clipr or socket, as a device for hanging the lamp, substantiallly as described. Y
In testimony whereof I, the said I). C. RIPLEY, Jr.,
