This invention relates toimprovements in spark-arresters and wind shields for cigars. One object of the invention is to provide a de'vice of this character adapted to `beapplied to cigars of any length and of dierent sizes whereby the sparks and ashes which may-fall from the cigars will be caught and thus prevented from doing any damage.

Another object of the invention is to'provide a spark arrester adapted to be adjusted on the vcigar to permit the latterV to be entirely consumed and which will not interfere withl he free and even burning of the cigar. A further lobject is to\ provide an automatically closing means for discharging the dead sparks and ashes from the arrester when desired.

' With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features ofi-construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.

By reference to the accompanying drawings it will be seen that my improved spark arrester and wind shield comprises a tubular cylindrical -body portion 1 formed of Ene mesh wire netting or other foraminous material, said body portion having secured to -the outer side of its inner end a metal sleeve or ferrule 2, said ferrule having formed in 'A55 theedge of its inner end oppositely disposed *notches or recesses 3 as shown. outer end of one of the plates 6 is provided with an outwardly curved lug 8 adapted to be engaged by the end of the thumb or finger to facilitate the releasing or disengaging of said plate from the cigar when the device is engaged with or adjusted on the cigar.

Arranged on the outer end of the bodyl 1 is a binding ring or band`9, said rin or band being rigidly secured to the end o the body by lugs 10 formed on the outer edge ofthe band and which are bent inwardly and clenched into tight engagment with the inner side'- of the body -1 as shown. The band 9 w len thus arranged formsa binding for the o ter end of the wire netting body of thearrester and also serves as a means for supporting a cover plate 11 which is hingedly connected to the outer edge of the band as shown. The cover plate 11 is provided with a closingfspring 12 whereby said plate is automatically closed and normally held in aclosedfpositlon. On the edge of the .cover plate opposite to the hinged connection thereof is formed an `outwardly curved cover opening lug 13 which is adapted to be engaged by the little finger andA .the cover plate thus pushed open against the pressure of the spring 12 toperdischarge of the dead sparks and .ashes which may have been -vcaught by the arrester.' p

A spark arrester and wind shield constructed in accordance with my invention may be quickly and easily applied to cigars of any length and of different sizes and when applied thereto will form an efficient thus preventing said sparks from doing' any The arrester will also catch and hold t e ashes which may fall from the endvr ford ample ventilation of the cigar and by means of the hingedv plate the ashes and sparks caught by .the arrester may be quickly and easily'discharged when desired.
