GEORGE W. WILKINS, OF TRINIDAD, COLORADO.
CIGAR LIGHTER.
Application filed December 5, 1922. Serial No. 605,140.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon W. lViLKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trinidad. in the county of Las Animas and State of Colorado. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in cigar lighters, and has for the primary object thereof, the provision of such a device that embodies the features of simplicity of construction and ease of In the drawing forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the cigar lighter constructed in accordance with the present invention, the same being shown as supported upon one of the spoke members of a conventional form of automobile steering wheel.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse cross sectional view: of the lighter.
Figure 3 is aside elevation thereof, showing more clearly the clamp carried by the lighter for engaging over the spoke of the steering wheel, a portion of the lighter proper;1 and clamp being shown in cross section, an
Figure 4 is a fragmentary cross sectional view through the upper portion of the lighter.
With particular referenceto the drawings, my device contemplates the provision of a relatively elongated flat-like casing 1, open at its top and closed at its bottom.
Transversely disposed Within the casing andadjacent the upper open end thereof, is a substantially double L-shaped partition 2, which partition is formed integral with the walls of the casing. The lower longi tudinal portion of this partition has a central screw threaded opening 3 formed therein and adapted for screw threaded engagement within this opening is the lower reduced screw threaded end of a hollow plug 4. This plug has knobs 5 integrally spaced thereon for facilitatingthe ready removal and attachment of the plug. Adapted for frictional engagement through the opening of this plug is a wick 6, this wick extending downwardly into the casing, and being embedded in a mass of cotton or other absorbent material 7. This absorbent material 7 is to be fully saturated with benzine, gasoline or the like.
in the upper longitudinal portion of the partition 2, there is formed a pendent annular-shaped cylinder 7, the upper end of this cylinder being provided with an externally screw threaded nipple 8, above the partition 2. Adapted for free sliding movement within this cylinder or casing 7, is a stick of spark producing material 9 such as flint or the like. lVithin the casing 7, and be neath the stick of spark producing material 9, is a relatively strong coiled spring 10. for normally forcing the stick of material outwardly therefrom. Screw threadedly engaging the screw threaded nipple 8, is a cap 11, which cap is provided with a central opening for permitting of the passage of the stick 8, and as more clearly shown in Figure 4, at diametrically opposite sides of this cap 11, are vertically extending arms 12, the upper ends of which are provided with an opening for receiving the ends of a pintle 13, which carries a wheel 14, which has the periphery thereof racked as shown, and adapted for frictional contact with the upper end of the spark producing stick of material 8. The casing 1 is provided with a curved cover plate 15, the opposite sides of this plate having pendent arms 16 pivotally secured as at 17 to the opposite sides of the casing 1, and adapted to swing thereon in a rearward direction. The inner surface of this cover plate 15, is racked as at 18 for engagement with the teeth of the said wheel 14, and the inner end of this cover plate has formed thereon, an upwardly extending and curved finger 19, for facilitating the swingin of the cover when this finger 19 is actuated In View of the above description, it will at once be apparent that when the cover 15 is swung rearwardly in the direction of the arrow, as shown in Figure 2, the wheel 14 will rotate in a direction also indicated by the arrow in this figure, and this wheel frictionally contacting with the spark produc-.
' type of automobile steering wheel, the easing 1 has formed thereon, one section 2041f a two-piece clamp. The other section 21 of the clamp is adjustablyconnected to the casing through the instrumentality of a rivet or small bolt 23 carried by the casing, and extending through a slot 22 in the clamp section. As clearly shown in Figure 3, these clamp sections are adapted to surround the steering Wheel spoke a and to be rigidly secured thereon by a fastening means 24, engaging through alined openings in the outer ends thereof.
By the provision of the mass of absorbent material 7, which contains the fuel, it will at once be apparent that the steering wheel may be rotated without occasioning any spilling of. the fuel.
While I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the present invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein ranged therein an I partition, a spring in the sleeve and norwithout departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
hat I claim as new is 1. An igniting device comprising a re- Ceptacle, a wick arranged therein, a springpressed spark producing element supported adjacent the wick, a rotatable element arranged above the spark-producing element,
engaged by the latter and having a plurality of teeth, a cover pivoted to the receptacle and movable transveisely of the upper end thereof, and a plurality of teeth formed on the under face of the cover and meshing with the teeth on the wheel where- .by to rotate the latter upon pivotal movement of the cover. l
2. An ignlting dev1ce comprising a receptacle, a stopped partition arranged there- .in, a wick arranged in the receptacle extending through one end of the partition, a sleeve depending from the other end of the partition, a sparkziproducing element arprojecting above the mally projecting the spark-producing element upwardly, a roughened wheel engaging the spark-producing element, a cover pivoted to the casing and movable transversely on the same, and adapted to actuate the roughened wheel upon said pivotal movement. I
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
GEORGE W. WILKINS.
