POCKET CONTAINER FOR SMOKERS REFUSE.
Application filed April 18, 1922. Serial No. 554,451.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that- I, GooDwIN THORTVEDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Glyndon, in the county of Clay and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pocket Containers for Smokers Refuse, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my said invention is the provision of a device adapted to be carried in the pocket of a vest or shirt after the manner of a watch and with or without attachment to a chain, and also adapted to be used as a convenient receptacle for cigar and cigarette stumps and ashes as well as a receptacle for match stems and other smokers refuse.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a container embodying means for clipping the end of a cigar, and this in such manner that the severed end of the cigar is received in the receptacle body of the device, and the opening through which the cigar end is placed for clipping is normally closedby the clipping knife member.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a perspective of my novel pocket container, the same being shown in closed state. I
Figure 2 is an edge elevation of the container as it appears when open and with the knife member of the cigar clipping means in retracted position.
Figure 3 is a detail section taken in the plane indicated by the line 33 of Figure 2.
Similar numerals: of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Among other elements my novel container comprises a body 1 which is preferably made in simulation of the body of a hunting case watch. The said body 1 in the preferred embodiment of my invention is provided with a stem 2 and a ring 3 on the stem in order to conduce to the simulation alluded to, and also for the convenient connection of the body 1 to a watch chain or other chain when the same is deemed expedient. On its edge the body 1 is preferably, though not necessarily, provided with a match scratching surface 1. In its edge wall the body 1 is provided with an opening 5 for the introduction of the end of a cigar to be clipped, it being noted in this connection that the clipped end of the cigar will be received in the body 1. The said opening 5 is normally closed by a slidable knife member 6, appropriately guided in the edge wall of the body 1.
In addition to the body 1 my novel container comp-rises a closure lid 7 hingedly connected at 8 to the body 1 and adapted to be engaged and detachably secured in closed position by a catch 9 carried by the body 1. In the preferred embodiment of my invention the lid 7 is provided at its outer side with a mirror 8. This, however, is not of the essence of my invention, and therefore the mirror may be employed or may be altogether omitted without affecting my invention as claimed.
In the practical use of my novel container the same is adapted to be removed from the pocket and opened after the manner of a watch, it being understood in this connection that the stem 2 is preferably connected with the catch 9 so that release of the lid 7 will attend inward pressure on the stem 2, and it will also be understood that when desired the lid 7 will be equipped like a watch lid with a spring to move the lid when released to the open position shown in Figure 2. While the container is held in the hand and in open state, ashes, cigar and cigarette stumps and burnt match stems may be quickly and easily placed in the container body 1 without attracting attention or exciting comment.
When my novel container is in closed state or in open state, the means described may be utilized to clip the end from a cigar, the cut end falling into the container body 1, and the opening being closed by the knife member 6 coincident with the severing of the end from the major portion of the cigar.
When desired the aperture 5 which is normally closed by the knife member 6 may be utilized for the discharge of ashes from the container.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the said specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications may be made such as fall Within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claim.
Having described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A pocket container forv smokers refuse comprising a hollow body open at one side and ha-ving'a hopper-shaped edge Wall portion and an opening therein, a movable stem carried by said body, a catch also carried by the body and associated with and movable by the stem, and a lid hingedly connected to the body and arranged to be engaged by the said catch and also arranged when released from the catch to spring open; the said body being also characterized by a movable knife member guided on the edge Wall of the body and adapted in one 20 position to close the said opening therein.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
GOODWIN THORTVEDT.
