To allwho'm it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODOR BAUMERT, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Deutsch Lissa, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an oar of that type where the rower can sit with his face turned toward the prow of the boat. The oar is constructed so that it can be quickly lifted up when there is not much room for the oar or when the boat is landing.
In the accompanying drawing the improved oar is shown Figure 1 is a plan view of the oar; Fig. 2 is a side view of the oar, the boat being shown in cross section; Fig. 3 is a similar view as Fig. 1, the outer part of the oar being lifted; Figs. 4 and 5 show the device for tilting the oar in its two positions; Fig. 6 is an elevation of the thole pin; Fig. 7 shows the counter-thole closed and Fig. 8 shows the same open. 1
The handle 1 of the oar is mounted in the thole 2 like a Cardan-joint, by means of the ring shaped swing support 3 which itself is inclosed in the ring-shaped thole 2. The latter can turn in a horizontal plane around the thole pin 1 like an ordinary thole. The movements of the handle 1 of the oar as well in the horizontal as in the vertical plane are inversely transmitted to the blade part 6 of the oar. This blade part 6 is connected with the handle part 1 by a joint 5. The blade part 6 of the oar is mounted in a counter thole 7 which is composed of two parts hingedly connected with each other so that the counter-thole can be quickly opened and closed. A pin 9 fixed on the part 6 of the oar serves as an abutment. The counter-thole 7 is pivotally mounted in the outer end of an angular support 10 the inner ends of which are pivotally mounted in hingeoints 11 adapted to be lifted with regard to the gunwale of the boat. The angular support 10 carries a vertical support 12 at the inner end of which a counterweight 13 is fixed which serves for automatically lifting said angular support 10 and with it the part 6 of the oar as soon as the first impulse has been given. The tilting of the angular support is limited by the gunwale of the boat against which the counterweight 13 butts (Fig. 5).
I claim An improved oar comprising in combination the handle part, a thole pivotally mounted in the gunwale of the boat, a ringshaped tilting support for the handle inclosed in said thole, the blade part of the oar, the hinged joint connecting said blade part with the handle, hinge-j oints fixed to the outer surface of the boat, an angular support fixed with its outer end on said hingejoints, a counter-thole on the apex of the angular support and inclosing the blade part of the oar, a vertical support fixed at one end of the angular support and a counterweight fixed at the inner end of said vertical support, substantially as described and shown and for the purpose set forth.
