UNITED STATES PATENT orrioe.
' W LLIAM A. IBUEHNER, or NEWAR -NEW JERSEY.
ADJUSTABLE POWER-RUBBER. FOR sMALL BOATS.
, and State of New Jersey,' have invented certa-in new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Power-Rudders for Small Boats, of
which the following is a specification.
I 3 and has the extra'support of two links 4: a I
My invention relates to power-rudders for small boats.
One object of my invention is to provide a power-steering gear which can be quickly fastened and adjusted to any kind of stern of a boat.
Another-object of my invention is to provide a lockable helm for the relief of the steering hand.
The drawings represent:
Figure I, an elevation of a power rudder. constructed according to my design. Fig. 2, an"elevation taken at right angles to he first," v
Fig. 3, a plan view of a certain detail, Fig.5 a, a sideview of the same,
. Fig. 5, a section" on theline 2-2 of Fig-:3,
' Fig.6, a plan view of another'detail,
Fig. 7 ,..'a side view of the same, partly broken away-Q The numerals indicate the following 30; j j
Numeral 1. a main frame to-be rigidly atparts:
tached to the stern of a boat by means of thumb screws 2. The usual motor frame consisting of a water-j acketed cylinder, a crank casing and a pipe like hearing for the driving shaft is pivoted to the main frame at pivotally attached to the main frame and at 5 and slidably tothe water-jacket of the cylinder and secured by thumb screws 6. A further support for the motor frame is given by a form 7 attached to the main frame at 8. A'block 9 is slidably attached'to one side of the fork and penetrates with a pin like projection 10 the other side 7' of the forlo Both sides canbe swung upon the main frame and are held tight againstfblock 9'by spring 11 held between the sides of the form upon projections 12 by pins 13 swing.

relative to the main frame. Y
An auxiliary sleeve 14 over the pipe like bearing of the driving shaft passes through the perforated block 9 and is held from sinking by collar 15. The steering. gear proper consists of sleeve 14, a hub 16 securely attached to it, a helm 17 attached to the hub 16 and a casing 18 containing the propeller shaft attached to sleeve 14 below the [pipe like hearing of the driving shaft. Power is conveyed from driving shaft to propeller shaft through bevel gear 19 and the casing containing the propeller shaft and holding the propeller 20 can without hindrance be turned bythe helm for steering purposes.
'The construction of the lockable helm forms the second part of my invention as the adjustable motor frame without interference withengineering for steering forms the firstjpart.
As to the second part which is particularly shown-in Figs. 6 and 7-, the helm 17 has an auxiliaryl'ever 21 movablyattached to it by pin '22 and. within grip of the steering hand. The other'end'23 of lever 21 is turned upward and rounded for the purpose of entering holes in a segment 21 which is securely attached to the water-jacket of the cylinder. 'When't'he lever 21 is in contact with the segment 24 and held thereby spring 25 between levers 17- and 21, the steering helm is locked in a certain position and the and allows of moving of the motor frame opposite end of said angular main frame engaging the adjacent end of said angular mo.- tor frame adapted to be fixed relative to said angular motor frame to prevent displacement of the first mentioned means.-
2. In an apparatus for power steering boats, a main frame, a motor frame pivot- 5 ally supported thereon, links pivoted on the main frame, a. sleeve on the motor frame,
and yieldable means on the links for holding the links against the sleeve and thereb locking the motor frame in its desired a. justed position.
WILLIAM F. A. BUEHNER.
