- This invention relates to improvements in motor boats and particularly to improvements in means for attaching the motor to the boat, and the objects of the invention are to provide improved means of this character preferably for motors of the direct drive type in which the housing or tube encloses the shaft and supports it from the base of the engine to the propeller.
- Still further objects are the provision of means whereby the motor is secured to a solid engine bed and sits lower in the boat, this providing a. steadier boat while permitting the engine to tilt on its bearings, thus lowering and raising the ropeller at will with the shaft, the propel er rising out of the water to the stern of the boat, thereby allowing accessibility to it, the propeller being also protected from injury when meeting with any obstruction.

MACHINE FOR USE IN CONJUNCTION WITH MOTO'R IN PROPELLING A BOAT.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM JAMES TURNBULL, of the village of Manville, in the Province of Alberta, Canada, having invented a new and useful Machine for Use in Conjunction with Motor in Propelling a Boat, do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same. i
This invention relates to improvements in motor boats and particularly to improvements in means for attaching the motor to the boat, and the objects of the invention are to provide improved means of this character preferably for motors of the direct drive type in which the housing or tube encloses the shaft and supports it from the base of the engine to the propeller.
Further obj cots are the provision of means intermediately connected to the tube whereby the engine is adapted to be swung on its bearings, permitting the motor to be installed further forward in the boat than has been possible with the construction heretofore used.
Still further objects are the provision of means whereby the motor is secured to a solid engine bed and sits lower in the boat, this providing a. steadier boat while permitting the engine to tilt on its bearings, thus lowering and raising the ropeller at will with the shaft, the propel er rising out of the water to the stern of the boat, thereby allowing accessibility to it, the propeller being also protected from injury when meeting with any obstruction.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists essentially in the novel arrangement and construction of parts as described in the present specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
Referring now to the drawings, in which like characters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in each figure,
Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing the position of the propeller when the engine,
is tilted upwardly, with dotted lines showing the position of the device in relation to the stern-piece when the engine is tilted downwardly.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the housing with means for swingingly mounting the engine and also adapted to receive the propeller shaft.
Figure 3 is a plan view of Figure 1.

Figure 5 is a detail plan View of the receiving member for the propeller'shaft.

In the drawings, 10 designates a housing adapted to lit the stern end of a boat and so formed that part of the rear end and bottom are in open communication with the water. 11 is a bearing bracket connected to the forward end of the housing and having journalled therein a trunnion shaft 12 permanently connected to the engine 13 of the usual standard construction and provided with a propeller shaft 14:, in turn provided with a tubular covering 15 adapted to envelop the shaft and formed at its rear end with a web 16. The forward end of this tube passes through a flexible packing gland 17, as shown in Figure 5, and designed to be fixedly secured on the end of the housing 10.
From the foregoing it will be noted that the engine is adapted to tilt on the bearings 18.
The flexible packing gland 17 is constructed of pliable waterproof material, preferably of tubular shape, and is provided with a central aperture 19 and also an outside metal ring 20 having orifices therein whereby the gland is fixedly secured to the front end plate 21, as shown in Figure 10, of the housing, the tubular aperture in the gland registering with the aperture 22 in the end plate, the inner end of said aperture 19 being provided with a metal sleeve 23 adapted to connect with the engine 13, thus allowing the shaft and housing to tilt with the englue and at the same time adapted to form an effective protection against the watch coming into the boat.
In Figure 1 is illustrated the position of the propeller when the engine tilts upwardly and also, in dotted lines, the opposite posi tion when the engine is tilted downwardly.
The housing is also provided with a projection 24 adapted to extend into the openings made for it in the stern-piece and keel, or, if desired,the housing can be made without this projecting flange.
To lock the propeller shaft a foldable lever 25 is provided, connected at one end to the propeller and extending upwardly and outwardly through the top of the housing 10.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that allm'atter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a propelling device, the combination with a housing adapted to fit the stern end of a boat, said housing being formed sothat part of the rear end and bottom are in open communication with the water, a bearing bracket connected to the forwardend of the housing, a trunnion shaft journalled in said bracket and permanently attached to an engine, a propeller shaft connected to the engine, a tube enveloping the shaft, with a web formed on its rear end, the forward end of the tube being designed to pass through a flexible packing gland connected to the housing and secured to the engine, means connected intermediate the tube to swing the engine in its bearings;
2. In a propelling device of the character described, the combination with a suitable housing adapted to communicate with an opening in the bottom of a boat, a bearing bracket connected to the forward end of the housing, an engine tiltably mounted in said bracket, a propeller shaft connected to the engine, a tube for said shaft and flexible means connecting the tube with the engine, comprising a flexible packing gland fixedly connected to the housing and adapted to receive thercthrough said tube and rigid means carried by the flexible gland adapted to connect the gland to the engine whereby on the engine being tilted a hinging point is formed by the gland to tilt the propeller shaft.
8. In a device of the character described, the combination with a suitable housing and an engine tiltably mounted on the outside of the housing and having a propeller shaft extending through the housing, of tubular means 011 said shaft and flexible gland means on the housing adapted to engage with the tube means and provided with rigid means to connect with the engine whereby a hinging point is formed between the housing and the tiltably mounted engine to tilt the propeller shaft, and means for locking the propeller shaft when tilted.
