Specification ef Letters latnt. I pplicationlednctoher 3,'1911.- Serial No'. 652,531.
Patented Jam. 9, 1912.
To all whom itmaycencem: l
Be it vknown that I, FREDERICK F.- SoHMrr'r, a citizen of the UnitedA States, `re` siding Philadelphia 'and .Sta'te of .Pennsylvania,v have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Mat-tresses, of which the fol-' flowing is "a specification.
, Myinvention relates to improvements in mattresses,l theobject of the invention being to provide amattress which .will not expand longitudinally or transversely after being used fora short time, but will maintain Aits original dimensions even should the tufting break. f
` I-Ieretofore in the manufacture of lmattresses, it has been the common practice to form the top, bottom, the sides and the ends of the mattresses all of-a dimensiongreater than the dimension of the finished mattress, so that when the mattress is tufted, the dimensions of the mattress will bebrought down to'that desired, hence as a natural con-' sequence when thetufting breaks, or after being used the plaits formed will spread and allowthe vmattress to assume thesize originally cut, and will'not properly t the bed.
It is. the' purpose of my invention therefore, to provide a mattress which overcomes such a defect land maintains its original dimensions at all times, and the inventionconsists in certain novel features of construction and combinations -and arrangements of "parts, as will be more fully hereinafter vde 435 scribed-and pointed out in the claim..
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1,
is a plan view partly broken away illustrating vmy improvements. Fig. 2, is-a'view "1nv longitudinal section on theline 2-,-2of Fig. 40 1, and Figf, is, afragmentary viewl in s ec.- tion en the line 3 3 of Fig-1.
i In formmg my 1mproved'mattress, I providesides l, and ends' 2,- whichwhen together form alcompartment which is the` exact size of the mattressto'be formed. To
these .sides and ends, I secure the to '3, and bottm v4 by lines'of stitching 5 and inding tapes 6, and this to and bottom are of dimensions 'in' both compensate for the tufting. Y
In'forming the mattress, the excess of the at Philadelphia-, in.. the county ofv u 'rections in excess of the sizeof the -fimshed mattress, so asto top and bottom are compensated for, as they are sewed tothesides and ends, by forming' plaits 7 which arefolded over or laidandsewed 'into the stitching 5. The operator in forming the mattress, of course, lays these plaits just Where the tufts are to be formed, and after it .is entirely sewed, and the tufts 8 made, said` tufts will take up the excess 'in the top and bottom andthe mattress will be formed of the -desired dimension Without yrelyingu on the tufts to hold it in shape.
As a furt er precaution against any expansion in either direction, and to assist the sides and ends to sustain the strains thereon,
. I provide a plurality of longitudinal and -lateralstrips -9,- which extend through the 'mattress and are sewed at their ends to the sides and ends respectively as clearly shown. These strips 9 I preferably form ofthe same material, asA the mattress cover, and they are preferably located centrally as seen in Figs. 2 and. l The mattress may of course be filled with any ordinary material with which mattresses are comm'onl -made, as myy improvements readily len themselves to` the manufacture as it isnow carried on.
. Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I 'do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and lalterations as fairly fall Within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by -Letters Patent is:
A mattress comprising sides and ends, top
.and bottom of dimensions in excess of the dimensions of the sides and ends, said top and bottom lsecured to the sides and ends, and' .having plaits laid at regular intervals, and tufts formed in said mattress in line with said p1aits,' substantially as described. In testimony whereof I have slgned my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
